Region oneRegion One Mental Health Review

Established in 1970, Region One Mental Health serves adolescents, adults and new or expecting parents suffering from alcoholism, substance abuse or addiction, as well as a wide variety of behavioral disorders such as food addiction, gambling addiction and sex addiction. With two residential facilities located in the serene countryside of northeast Mississippi, Region One seeks to provide affordable treatment for residents of Coahaoma, Quitman, Tallahatchie and Tunica counties. Region One also offers outpatient treatment at their main facility in Clarksdale for those whose daily lives preclude them from attending residential treatment.

Accommodations and Food

Region One’s two residential facilities sit side by side on an expansive rural property in the Mississippi Delta. The adult facility, Fairland Center, caters not only to adults over 18 years of age, but also to new and expectant mothers and single parents. Children of these clients are welcome to stay with their parents. Fairland offers 50 beds in a dormitory-like setting, with two beds to a room. There’s also one bathroom for every two bedrooms. All adults generally have a roommate, though that may not apply for those who choose to bring children along with them. Should children be present, additional roll-in beds or cribs can be moved into the room if the two beds already provided are not sufficient.

At the adolescent location, Sunflower Landing, up to 35 residents between the ages of 12 to 18 stay in similar accommodations. The rooms at both facilities are relatively unadorned, with twin beds, bedside tables and dressers.

Both facilities have a cafeteria where simple but hearty dishes like meatloaf, macaroni and cheese and pot roast are served. The cafeteria is open during fixed hours—8 am to 10 am for breakfast, noon to 2 pm for lunch and 5:30 pm for dinner. All residents eat together at long tables. Food allergies can be accommodated, though clients should expect limited options when it comes to restricted diets.

The property is quiet, with plenty of tall trees to provide shade and softball fields where weekly games occur. There are also walking trails through the fields and woods on the property.

Sunflower Landing has a stable and several pens where farm animals are kept. Residents play with and take care of these animals during their stay.

Treatment and Staff

At both facilities, treatment consists of weekly individual and group therapy several afternoons per week, as well as daily 12-step meetings. Adolescents at Sunflower Landing take part in animal- assisted therapy to provide them with a sense of responsibility for something outside themselves. Animals kept on the property include dogs, cats, horses, goats, sheep and even a parrot. Art therapy and CBT are also used with adolescents.

Length of stay is generally 35 days for adults and eight months for adolescents. Adult treatment is self-paced with very few restrictions or regulations. Fairland offers on-site detox lasting roughly 10 days for adults 18 years of age and older and both facilities are equipped to support dual-diagnosis clients.

At Sunflower Landing, there is a particular focus on education and helping clients get their GEDs, complete high school or prepare for college entrance exams. Daily classes are held on topics such as relapse prevention, self-care and positive thinking. Community service is also a component, with residents required to participate  for five hours per week.

A handful of LSWs and counselors who are assigned no more than 12 clients at one time make up the staff at both locations. Counselors include LADCs, CADCs and CSACs. An RN is on staff around the clock at both facilities as well.

Region One offers outpatient treatment through their main health facility in Clarksdale. Outpatient can last upwards of a year, though this varies on a case-by-case basis. The program consists of individual, couples and family therapy. Time spent in therapy per week differs from client to client. Substance abuse education and 12-step meetings are also an integral part of outpatient therapy.

In Summary

Region One caters not only to those with substance abuse issues but also those suffering from behavioral disorders like gambling addiction. Clients can expect a safe, simple and calm environment and an emphasis on self-care and community without harsh restrictions or rules. Fairland is one of the few residential programs in the area that allows children to be present during treatment.
