Refuge for RedemptionThe Basics

Located in downtown Riverside, California, the Refuge for Redemption is a men’s sober living facility that is deeply rooted in the 12 steps. Besides providing a safe and clean environment for men in recovery and helping clients find work, the Refuge for Redemption works hard at being a positive force in the local community, thereby dispelling the notion that sober living homes depreciate the quality of a neighborhood.

Accommodations and Amenities

Residents live in a two-story five-bedroom bungalow-style house in a quiet residential neighborhood. The house includes a fully equipped kitchen, three full bathrooms, a living room and a spacious fenced backyard. The living room is a bachelor-style set up with a couch, a flat screen TV and a glass coffee table. The house has a 15-bed capacity. Accommodations vary between three and six people per room. A typical room includes one or two bunk beds, a twin bed, a throw rug and plastic bins for storage. Amenities include local and long distance telephone privileges, satellite TV, a house computer with Internet access and laundry facilities. The house is in close proximity to 12-step meetings, public transportation, shopping, and USC Riverside.

Clients purchase their own groceries. The kitchen includes two large refrigerators, as well as an extra one in the laundry room. Residents prepare their own meals, but stove cooking is not allowed after 9 pm. Use of the microwave is permitted for clients who want to heat up a quick meal.

Rules and Regulations

Although the Refuge for Redemption prefers clients who have completed a 30-day inpatient substance abuse and addiction treatment program, they will make exceptions, depending on a client’s level of commitment to staying clean and sober and his desire to work the steps. All potential residents must pass a drug and alcohol screening prior to moving in.

During the first 30 days, residents must attend daily 12-step meetings, perform household chores, be present at all house meetings and obtain sponsors. After that time, clients must secure employment and attend a minimum of four weekly meetings. At Refuge for Redemption, clients are subject to random drug and alcohol screenings. Those testing positive are subject to immediate removal from the premises. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays to Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

In Summary

Refuge for Redemption offers a safe and clean environment for clients in recovery. Length of stay is also determined by a client’s needs. Some residents have lived there for as long as ten years. For those wanting affordable sober living and a 12-step environment, this sober living house would be a great choice.
