Rediscovery Review
Our Home, Inc was founded in 1972 in Huron, South Dakota with the purpose of providing shelter for at-risk teens. Today, the organization specializes in all types of youth treatment, including substance abuse at its co-ed residential facility, Rediscovery. Our Home, Inc serves young people between the ages of 12 and 18, and operates three facilities, two in Huron and one in nearby Parkston. In addition to substance abuse, it offers a male-only adolescent sexual adjustment program (ASAP) and a co-ed psychiatric residential facility.
Accommodations and Food
Rediscovery has a 20-bed capacity, split evenly between girls and boys. Residents are paired in gender-specific dorm-style rooms that are furnished with twin beds, a closet and a shared dresser.
Residents are served three hot meals a day plus snacks inside the quaint Huron Campus dining hall. A typical day’s menu includes yogurt or French toast and scrambled eggs for breakfast, chicken fajitas with green and red pepper strips with ranch or salsa dressing and pineapple chunks for lunch. A typical dinner entrée includes turkey potpie, corn bread and frozen berries. Beverages include chocolate milk, milk and orange juice. Special needs diets are accommodated.
Clients are granted a weekly allowance of $10.50 for personal use. They are allowed to purchase sodas and candy on their weekend outings.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment length is typically between 45 and 60 days. Rediscovery subscribes to the disease concept of addiction and that youth are best served in a caring atmosphere, while learning social skills. It also believe most clients with substance abuse disorders require dual diagnosis support. Initial assessments include nursing care evaluation, physical examination, diagnostics interview assessment and other psychological tests. Following the assessment, each client gets an individualized treatment plan. Those in need of detox are referred to another facility before beginning treatment at Rediscovery.
Treatment is broken into three stages, with the first being an orientation phase, the second focusing on treatment and the third on discharge planning. Rediscovery utilizes the 12-step modality and a large part of treatment takes place in a group therapy setting. Other treatment includes individual therapy, family therapy and attendance at two weekly AA/NA meetings, both on and off the premises.
Weekly group sessions focus on peer support, 12-step study, spirituality and education. Education topics include relapse prevention, drug and alcohol clarification, behavioral skills and relationship building. Special “task” groups focus on personal issues such as sexuality and self-esteem and co-occurring disorders. Counselors assign homework exercises designed to help each client reach their treatment goals. In addition, clients learn about other cultures and pursue their academic education. There is an on-site school that is certified by the state of South Dakota.
Rediscovery employs about eight staff members, including a licensed psychologist, a teacher, two LCDCs and two CADCs.
Extras
Recreational therapy includes basketball, volleyball, weights and softball. Clients are taken on weekend outings to movies and local AA events.
Rediscovery offers a short-term relapse program for criminal justice clients who recently completed jail time or inpatient rehab. Treatment is typically between seven and 18 days and involves group therapy, family therapy and involvement with the Department of Corrections. Group topics include relapse prevention and identifying triggers.

Rediscovery offers comprehensive services for youth suffering from drug and alcohol abuse. The rehab offers vital recovery tools like an introduction to the 12-step philosophy, dual diagnosis support and the ability to maintain school work while in treatment. While attending this rehab might not be a picnic, residents will secure a good foundation for long-term recovery.
