Red Rock Canyon School is an adolescent residential treatment facility for teens ages 12 to 18, located in St. George, Utah. The great location offers the natural beauty of national parks and monuments, as well as being in the middle of Utah’s red sandstone cliffs and black lava bluffs.
Accommodations and Food
The Red Rock Canyon School is set-up similar to a college campus within a serene, picturesque setting. Residents live in gender-specific dorm-style bedrooms, with twin bunk beds in each room. The central hub for students is the cafeteria, where chefs provide students with daily nutritious meals and snacks that are healthy but delicious. Special diets for health or religious reasons can also be accommodated based on the needs of each individual student.
Treatment and Staff
Red Rock Canyon school employs a multi-therapeutic model, which includes group therapy, on-site 12-step groups, social skills workshops, educational lectures, student community groups, leadership training and anger management. Individual therapy is offered to students at least once a week, with dual-diagnosis support available for those with mental health issues. Some clients stay for an entire school year, which is around nine months, but are welcome for up to a year. All clients are required to attend on-site academic classes during their stay. They also work from Hazelden’s Living in Balance Program and Adolescent Chemical Dependency Recovery Workbook. The facility also has a focus on positive peer culture and works to build a student’s self-worth through instilling values like being of service and personal accountability.
With a staff of more than 55 people Red Rock has a complete medical team, a licensed psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, eight Master’s-level mental health therapists (each with a distinct specialization and experience in adolescent recovery) academic teachers and resident directors. The school is headed by Dr. Randal Draper, Psychiatrist, Medical Director, Dr. Jerry Twiggs, Pediatrician and Joel Beckstrand, Principal of Academics. There is a registered nurse on-site around the clock to monitor each student’s medical needs, as well as staff that are CPR certified and trained in first aid.

The Red Rock Canyon School classrooms are equipped with all the latest technology of computers and educational tools to ensure that students are able to reach their full potential academically, so they can return back to their home school with confidence, and go on to college. They also have amenities like a recording studio, a yoga studio, a fitness center, a multipurpose room for games and group sessions, a gym with a rock climbing wall and space for other sports, outdoor basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, a state of the art theater room for movie nights and a dance floor for fitness activities and recreational dances. Red Rock also encourages team sports play with the students as an outlet to learn further interpersonal skills like cooperation, being a team player, hard work and learning how to take responsibility.

Red Rock Canyon School strongly believes that family involvement and support is vital for treatment and recovery. In addition to monthly academic and therapeutic progress reports sent home, there is a family program available that offers family therapy sessions for visiting families each quarter with the student’s therapist. During the quarterly Family weekend, family therapy sessions take place, as well as a parents group where the family members of all the students meet, share their experiences and support each other.
