Red River Recovery Center Review
Red River Recovery Center is a 90-day, low-intensity treatment facility for substance abuse. Located in Dilworth, Minnesota, a small town about three hours from Minneapolis, the program began as a halfway house in 1974. It began offering residential treatment after moving to another location in 2005. This is a no-frills, community-based approach to recovery that follows the 12-step model.
Accommodations and Food
The 66-bed treatment center does everything under one roof, including meals, housing and therapy. The two-person bedrooms are modest, with a motel type of feel. They each include full-sized beds, carpeting and wooden dressers. Single rooms are available but usually go to those with seniority. A common area is down the hall from the rooms, offering leather couches and a TV and a cozy place to hang out.
When it comes to physical fitness, the options are pretty limited. A small weight room with a couple of treadmills and weights can be used during free time. Clients are also free to go for walks when the schedule permits. Smoking is allowed in designated areas on the property.
Three meals a day are provided. The staff prepares the food on-site, serving it in the dining hall. Favorites include mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, pasta and chicken wings. Coffee and snacks are available throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
The foundation of the treatment approach is the 12 steps. While daily meetings are not required, clients must attend two off-site AA/NA meetings per week; transportation is provided. This is a 90-day program and there is no detox available or medical treatment of any kind. With the help of counselors, clients attend lectures, individual therapy once a week and several hours of group therapy each day. Evidence-based modalities such as CBT and DBT are used, with group topics such as relapse prevention, anger management, nutrition, life skills, trauma and processing.
In addition to experiencing the spiritual aspect of recovery through the 12-step meetings, residents participate in a meditation every morning. The program does not offer a psychiatrist or medication management. Those who need those services can arrange for outside support; additional fees may ensue. Also missing is a family program, with family members limited to weekend visits.
The counseling staff includes program director Deb Borstad, a licensed addiction counselor with 29 years of experience treating chemical dependency, and two residential counselors.
