Founded in 2007 in the Boston suburb of Weymouth, Massachusetts, Recovery Upfront provides sober living for men in early recovery from chemical dependency. Besides Weymouth, Recovery Upfront has a house in the nearby town of Quincy. Their mission is to help newly sober men who have a strong desire to maintain their recovery by providing them with safe and structured 12-step based housing.
Accommodations and Amenities
Each house accommodates ten men. The spacious white Quincy House has a symmetrical three-story design. The Colonial-style Weymouth residence is a large beige house with white trim and includes a porch with white columns. Clients are lodged in furnished, double-occupancy rooms or singles. A single room includes a full-sized bed with a comforter, a dresser, desk and lamp.
Residents are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Amenities include laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, cable TV and ample street parking. Each residence has onsite management. Smoking is permitted outside in designated areas only.
Rules and Regulations
Typically, potential clients have a minimum of 30 days of sobriety under their belt, or have completed at least 30 days of primary care at a residential treatment facility. An application must be filled out, followed by an interview with staff to ensure that Recovery Upfront is a proper fit. All potential residents must pass a drug test prior to being admitted into the sober living program.
New residents are on probation for 90 days. Requirements include attending four 12-step meetings per week, performing daily household chores, making sure rent is paid on time and being at the weekly Thursday house meeting. Clients are expected to acquire and begin to work the steps with sponsors soon after arrival, if they haven’t done so already. Other requirements include finding a job, if unemployed, or attending school or if disabled, performing community service.
The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Staff must approve any overnights. Clients are expected to treat each other with respect, and maintain a spirit conducive to recovery. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. At Recovery Upfront, a zero tolerance policy is enforced. Residents who relapse must leave the premises immediately.
The houses are located in close proximity to 12-step meetings, public transportation, eateries, and local businesses.
Recovery Upfront is a member of the Massachusetts Association of Sober Housing (MASH), which stresses high standards from its affiliates.
At Recovery Upfront, the expansive houses allow residents a chance to have their own space, while still being part of a family-style atmosphere. For men seeking a comprehensive 12-step based setting in charming East Coast milieus, Recovery Upfront may be the perfect match.
