Recovery Outfitters, Inc. (ROI) is located about an hour north of Atlanta in Cumming, Georgia. It offers programs for young men addicted to drugs and alcohol, each designed to address different levels of need. The continuum of care at ROI provides residential treatment, transitional living and aftercare for adolescent males, ages 13 to 18, who are dealing with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health issues.

Accommodations and Food

ROI is on eight acres of spacious property surrounded by Georgia pines and maples. The property boasts a large pond for fishing and canoeing. The main treatment facility can accommodate up to 16 men and has a comfortable atmosphere designed to make residents feel like home. Clients live dorm-style, each sharing a room with three other guys. Bedding and toiletries are provided.

In a separate home, up to eight transitional living clients also reside on campus. They enjoy more freedom and a family-style atmosphere geared to facilitate peer support and building of life skills—like cooking and cleaning. Nutritious meals are served three times a day and healthy snacks are also provided.

Treatment and Staff

Residents typically stay a minimum of three months but it really depends on the person. ROI recognizes the importance of dual diagnosis support for depression, PTSD, ADHD and bi-polar disorder. All clients meet with the Medical Director and Board-Certified Psychiatrist, Dr. Steven Jaffe, on a regular basis to discuss psychiatric conditions, medications and any additional medical needs or issues. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) via Naltrexone or Vivitrol is available on site for clients struggling to abstain from opiates or alcohol.

Clients must attend at least one individual session a week. Group therapy commences daily, for an average of 12 hours a week, and clients choose classes they would like—including adolescent male development, trauma resolution and coping skills. Therapy employs evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Attending on and off-site AA/NA meetings is required and transportation is provided as necessary.

ROI also runs a fully accredited secondary school on site called Avner Bush Academy, where academic credit can be earned and transferred to other schools upon exiting. Guidance counseling is also provided.

CARES—an acronym for creating a recovery environment for success— is a program that offers transitional living for recent ROI graduates. Clients must be at least 90 days clean, successfully working or attending school and have completed the first five of the 12 steps to be eligible to transition to the CARES House. This is a safe place to begin a more independent lifestyle. The guys learn about public transportation, money management, accessing medical services, cooking and building employment skills. While living at the CARES House, clients continue to meet with their primary counselor and attend weekly groups. ROI also continues to assist them with their medication management, psychiatric and medical needs.

The ROI staff includes Master’s and PhD-level teachers and therapists, who specialize in adolescent development and addictive disorders, CADCs, case managers and LCSWs.

Extras

In addition to traditional therapeutic methods, art therapy, meditation, outdoor adventures and team-building exercises like a ROPES course are also incorporated into treatment.

The free year-long aftercare program supports independent living and is available to anyone who has successfully completed treatment at ROI. The minimum requirements are continued abstinence and participation in weekly groups led by a staff member. Alumni who have been in the aftercare program for a year can continue to come to weekly groups or call a counselor any time they need to.
