Recovery Network of ProgramsRecovery Network of Programs Review

A Connecticut institution since 1972, Recovery Network of Programs is exactly what it says it is: a large network of recovery-oriented facilities and programs serving those struggling with addiction, homelessness, mental health disorders and more. Recovery Network is a CARF-accredited organization which has won the Connecticut Post’s “Top Work Places” award the last three years in a row. They offer outpatient services, medically assisted detox and inpatient care. Since the size of their company prohibits an extensive listing of all their services, a good sense of their available care can be gleaned by considering one of their major co-ed, inpatient facilities: Horizons in Bridgeport, Connecticut’s most populous city.

Accommodations and Food

All clients at Horizons are housed in a large, residential home in Bridgeport. There’s capacity for 15 clients at a time, with a generally even breakdown between genders. Residents share rooms with one other person, all of which are furnished with twin beds and minimal furniture. There is a cook on staff who handles the preparation of three hot meals a day, all served in-house in Horizon’s large kitchen area. A home atmosphere pervades everything at Horizons, with all activities occurring on-site; given the shorter nature of the program, that level of comfort is necessary to allow their treatment to have a maximum impact.

Treatment and Staff

One of the advantages of Recovery Network’s wide net is that medical detox is available at one of its own facilities, First Step Detox, also located in Bridgeport. During this process, clients can expect individual counseling, group therapy and case management; residents visit with Recovery Network’s staff psychiatrist during this phase as well.

From here, clients begin their program at Horizons, which typically lasts 28 days, though residents are permitted to stay slightly longer if they are still working to procure a solid aftercare program. During their stay at the Horizons house, clients attend six group sessions a day as well as a plethora of 12-step meetings, both on and off-site throughout the week. These group sessions cover topics like anger management, depression and family issues. Horizons is staffed with therapists and licensed counselors who handle the day-in, day-out work of recovery with around-the-clock care. Furthermore, clients can rest assured that due to Recovery Network’s medical connections, medical access is easy and convenient.

Extras

Residents take weekly trips to the downtown library as well as Bridgeport’s beach, located on the Long Island Sound. In the house itself there is a pool table, piano and television set, where clients can gather to watch movies. As far as exercise goes, residents are on their own—there are no gym facilities or even free weights in the house, though Horizons does begin each day with light stretching before the therapeutic work begins.

Being part of the Recovery Network does have particular advantages, however, when it comes to aftercare. At the end of their stay, clients can work out a comprehensive aftercare program, with many outpatient options to choose from. The chief option is Recovery Counseling Services, in which residents can participate in either of two levels of care: low-intensity counseling or more intensive counseling, which meets more frequently. Services include the treatment of co-occurring psychiatric disorders.

In Summary

Given the wide swath of treatment Recovery Network of Programs offers, those who matriculate into their care can be sure that their basic needs will be met. Residents have access to a medical detox, comprehensive inpatient care and aftercare, all at their discretion. Recovery Network of Programs still offers a solid base to enact one’s recovery.
