Located in Concord, California, Recovery Management Services is a non-profit corporation offering a range of chemical dependency treatment programs under the name Crossroads Program Services. Founded by a recovering alcoholic, Recovery Management Services has been serving the community of Concord and surrounding areas for 23 years, providing flexible, economically viable treatment options in an attempt to ensure that all clients acquire what it considers to be the most important element of recovery: the sober family.
Accommodations and Food
Recovery Management Services has two large Victorians in the historical district of Concord. The administrative offices, counseling offices and main group room are located on the first floor of the main house along with the dining area, kitchen and TV room. The house manager shares the second floor with 10 male residents in five rooms with two bathrooms; each client has a twin bed and a nightstand and roommates share a closet. The female residents live in an identical situation in the house across the street, but come to the main house for group and television. There are no cell phones or personal electronics allowed and time around television viewing in the main house must be scheduled gender-specifically as there is no socializing between the sexes allowed at this facility.
The house manager does all of the grocery shopping and prepares a simple dinner Monday through Thursday while residents are responsible for preparing all other meals themselves. On Friday and Saturday nights, the residents make dinner together as a group through consensus; things like spaghetti or tacos. The food is generally basic: sandwiches, cereal, yogurt, milk, juice and fruit. A salad bar is available at lunch and dinnertime and caffeine is allowed up until noon.
Staff and Treatment
The average length of stay with Recovery Management Services ranges from 30 to 90 days and each resident is evaluated on a monthly basis in order to determine where he or she is with regards to continued participation. Residents must be clean and sober for 72 hours prior to admission and for those who find this impossible, the potential client must see a doctor for a professional directive. There is no medical detox offered here but clients may enter the facility under doctor’s orders for what is considered a light detox for an extra fee.
Recovery Management Services offers a 12-step based program run and operated by sober people; two to three counselors are on site during the week and there are also two technicians available at all times, but there are no psychologists on staff and no dual diagnosis support is offered. All groups are run by certified drug counselors and focus on addiction, relapse prevention and 12-step ideology; technicians walk the residents to local 12-step meetings three nights a week.
Once clients make it into their third month of treatment, they are required to find a job with the help of their counselor, technicians and their sober community. At this point, residents are also expected to have a sponsor in a 12-step program, a regular meeting commitment and to be actively engaged in this fellowship. Those clients who are in this work phase are expected to attend four meetings per week and must have house slips signed at these meetings as proof of attendance in addition to undergoing random drug and alcohol testing.
Family programming is a weekly event at Recovery Management Services. Loved ones are welcomed every Tuesday night and each group is facilitated by one of the counseling staff. Additionally, clients may receive visitors on the weekends after two weeks, though visiting is restricted to relatives.
For men and women who are continuing their regular employment, Recovery Management Services also offers a 90-day residential recovery program; working professionals are provided counseling services in a structured living situation. This tract is designed to work with EAP/Human Resource Departments, referrals from the judicial system and concerned family members.
Recovery Management Services believes that it takes more than 30 days to establish a new way of living clean and sober. To ensure this philosophy, a 90-day stay is recommended, whereby the clients have employment and a host of sober friends before discharge. Based wholly on 12-step ideology, this moderately priced facility is ideal for those who suffer strictly from drug and alcohol addiction and prefer a homey, family-style environment.
