The Basics
Founded in 2005 in Hollywood, Florida, Recovery House 54 offers semi-structured and safe sober living for men. The mission of those who work there is to treat clients with the same respect and dignity that they would desire for themselves. Although any man is welcome to apply, Recovery House 54 typically attracts a more mature crowd. Residents tend to be in their forties and fifties.
Accommodations and Amenities
Recovery House 54 is centrally located near the beaches and local businesses. The quaint yellow house has shallow, sloping roofs and white trim. Surrounded by palm trees and a pristine lawn, the residence has a fenced yard with a barbeque grill. Recovery House 54 accommodates 11 men who are paired in furnished rooms, which include twin beds with storage headboards, dressers, ample storage space and hanging art canvases.
Windows are covered with faux wood blinds allowing for privacy. The house includes a living room, dining room and a fully equipped kitchen with extra food storage, two coffee pots and two microwave ovens. Residents are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. Amenities include central air conditioning, paper supplies, cable TV, Wi-Fi, ample street parking, washer and dryer, and a house computer. A house manager lives on the premises.
Rules and Regulations
With the belief that free “time is the devil’s playground,” clients are required to attend a minimum of four weekly 12-step meetings. Other requirements include performance of simple household chores and participation in feasible employment, volunteer work or enrollment in school. At Recovery House 54, while residents are encouraged to pursue productive pursuits, those requiring transitional care are provided with appropriate referrals.
Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. Residents who have relapsed are immediately dismissed from the premises, to ensure the safety of the entire household. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
