Recovery First Inc is a mid-size recovery facility about eight miles from the beach in Hollywood, Florida. Recovery First was founded in 2001 by James F. Davis, a certified interventionist and addict with 30 years in recovery. Today, he and his wife serve as CEO and CFO, respectively.
Accommodations and Food
For the most part, this 28-resident facility (not including detox) encourages independent living. Clients live in gender-separated, quadruple-occupancy apartments separated into two rooms with twin beds. Each room has plenty of storage space, a television, a bathroom and a full kitchen.
In keeping with their goal of independence, residents are responsible for cleaning and cooking for themselves, as well as buying their own weekly groceries with staff supervision. During detox, which occurs at a different facility nearby, clients also share bedrooms, though these accommodations are more luxurious. In detox, each room has granite countertops, a flat screen television, an in-room telephone and catered meals.
The facility has a few different common areas for residents to enjoy—one is equipped with a television set and couches while the other has darts and air hockey. Recovery First also boasts a common area outside, with shaded tables where clients can enjoy the Floridian weather or smoke, if they wish to.
Treatment and Staff
As mentioned, treatment at Recovery First begins with a medically supervised detox. Once residents are stabilized, they begin a rigorous treatment plan with over 66 hours a week of professional treatment, including individual therapy, group therapy with CBT, denial management, stress management, grief and loss meetings and educational meetings on topics like addiction and relapse prevention.
A typical day at Recovery First Inc generally begins with a 7:00 am wake-up followed by group meetings beginning at 8:00 am. Each client has an individualized day of group meetings, individual sessions, educational seminar and on or off-site 12-step meetings (with transportation provided by staff, when necessary). There’s also recreation broken up by meals, which take place not at the treatment facility but back at the residences. Because of their emphasis on independence, clients do not have a set time for lights-out. Still, they must return to their apartments shortly after treatment finishes for the day.
Staff at Recovery First Inc includes a clinical director with a Master’s, an executive director, a team of licensed therapists and a 24-hour Registered Nurse. The staff-to-resident ratio is one-to-two.
In terms of recreation, there’s bowling, boat rides, beach trips and movies. Clients also have the opportunity to go to a nearby gym two to three times per week for a couple hours at a time; on weekends, staff escort residents to the beach for down time.
After completing residential treatment, clients may continue treatment with their Recovery First’s “day/night” program, which means transitioning to sober living housing with transport to daily 12-step meetings. Alumni may also participate in outpatient treatment upon graduation from the program. As an effort to raise awareness for post-acute withdrawal syndrome, Recovery First also goes to great lengths in customizing individual aftercare plans.
Overall, Recovery First offers in-depth treatment with an ideal staff-to-resident ratio at a competitive price point (albeit on the higher-end of affordable treatment options). While those looking for luxurious treatment with yoga and massages may want to look elsewhere, those seeking a safe, medically sound program with access to the beach may find this program a good fit.
