Recovery Centers of America: Westminster Review
In 2016, Recovery Centers of America (RCA) opened a high-end residential treatment center in Westminster, a bucolic town in the mountains of central Massachusetts. RCA operates a number of programs that provide comfortable, high-end amenities alongside a treatment philosophy of respectful and open communication between clients and clinicians.
RCA Westminster includes detox and was “designed to be the most patient-centric substance abuse treatment facility in the United States.” Clients receive highly-customized treatment plans and, when they’re near the end of their stay, detailed discharge plans that take into account their recovery goals, budget and family obligations in order to help them take their next steps in sobriety.
Accommodations and Food
RCA Westminster is located in a renovated country manor house on several wooded acres. The facility has 48 beds and both single and double-occupancy rooms are available. Rooms have flat-screen plasma TVs and pillow-top mattresses with high threat-count sheets.
The manor has multiple common areas for reading, playing video games and congregating with other residents. Clients can enjoy its basketball court and heated swimming pool and go for runs on the manor grounds. While clients cannot have phones and computers in their possession, they are permitted monitored phone and computer time to keep up with work responsibilities.
A chef supervises a kitchen staff that creates farm-to-table meals that accommodate residents’ dietary restrictions and preferences. Vegetarian options are always available, and snacks and coffee are provided throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
Detox usually lasts three to seven days, after which clients begin residential treatment. Days begin with a community meeting and then group therapy. Each client has a “primary group” that doesn’t exceed eight participants. Primary groups meet daily to process recovery issues. After, residents have four to five additional groups and lectures each day. Group topics include family systems, mindfulness, leadership skills and the disease of addiction. Clients also have individual therapy at least once a week.
Therapy uses Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT to help clients develop coping skills. While co-occurring disorders are addressed in therapy, clients in need of dual diagnosis support might be referred to a nearby mental health center for additional therapy and medication management.
Each evening, clients are encouraged to attend optional AA/NA meetings on-site. Daily counseling sessions also incorporate using the 12-step framework and exploring the role of spirituality in recovery.
The treatment team at Westminster includes physicians, a 24-hour nursing staff, CADCs, Master’s-level therapists and a consulting psychiatrist.
Extras
Clients can expect weekly sessions of art and yoga therapy and Reiki and massage therapy.
Family members are encouraged to visit, and clients can invite family to individual therapy for family counseling.
The treatment team creates a discharge plan with each client that may include stepping down to its recently-opened outpatient program in Danvers, Massachusetts, an hour away. Recovery Centers of America also facilitates an active alumni network that hosts events and connects graduates in different cities.
