The Basics

In the small southwestern Colorado town of Cortez, The Recovery Center (TRC) has been a fixture for over 10 years. Formerly known as Cortez Addiction Recovery Services (CARS),  it offers outpatient substance abuse and mental health treatment services for adults and adolescents as well as pregnant women and families. The services include “enhanced” outpatient treatment—their term for what is essentially intensive outpatient (IOP)—traditional outpatient, adolescent outpatient, adolescent school-based programs, and adult and youth relapse prevention.

Treatment and Staff

TRC does not emphasize the 12 steps or offer detox services, but accommodates dual diagnosis cases. Referrals can be provided for those who need inpatient treatment or medical detox services.

The TRC adult enhanced outpatient program lasts 16 weeks. Clients take part in 100 hours of therapy—96 of which are taken up by group therapy sessions and the remaining four by individual. The traditional outpatient treatment is a 68-hour program during which clients undertake an individualized combination of group and individual sessions over approximately 16 weeks. The youth outpatient program accepts adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 years and helps them to develop emotional regulation, stress tolerance and goal-setting skills through 32 hours of individual, group and family sessions over 16 weeks.

All programs use evidence-based techniques, including the DBT approach to therapy and Integrated Dual Diagnosis Therapy (IDDT) for those with co-occurring disorders.

In addition to the group and individual sessions, clients are required to provide negative urine drug screens and breathalyzers during each session. TRC has a a policy that there may be no more than 12 clients per group. Concurrently with the therapy sessions, TRC also provides clients with nutritional counseling, employment counseling, family wellness and anger management classes.

Relapse prevention at TRC is a 16-week program. There are two separate gender-specific groups and, during treatment, clients identify, create and strengthen their support systems. Clients may also participate in community resources like AA/NA meetings, volunteering, religious organizations, educational institutions and sports teams.

TRC employs three case managers, six CADCs, three nursing assistant drug testers and a nurse who serves as the testing manager.

Extras

TRC offers a member-run alumni group for ongoing post-treatment support.

The First Offender program is a three-hour course that TRC offers to educate youth between the ages of 12 and 19 about the consequences of drug or alcohol use. The TRC student assistance program runs gender-specific groups for middle- and high-school students that address family problems, social issues and drug and alcohol problems that students face.

In Summary

The Recovery Center offers a comprehensive list of services. While detox and residential treatment are not provided, for those that need a less intensive level of care, this facility may be ideal, especially because of its very affordable pricing.
