The Basics

Located in Seattle, Washington, Recovery Allies is an organization that specializes in the care and support of men and women struggling to maintain sobriety. Recovery Allies was founded in 2011 by recovery specialist Rachel Angerman to help any individual, regardless of income or background, with alcohol and substance use disorders as well as co-occurring mental health conditions. The team provides comprehensive, expert interventions as well as mentoring and transportation. While the Recovery Allies team can help clients with co-occurring disorders, medication management is not available.

The Background

Recovery Allies employs a team of interventionists, mentors and case managers. Founder Rachel Angerman has been sober since 2004 and has extensive first-hand knowledge of addiction and trauma. Angerman is a qualified interventionist that specializes in clients with alcohol and substance use disorders, eating disorders and surface addictions like sex and gambling. She was certified as an interventionist through ARISE.

The Approach

Recovery Allies does not believe in a “one size fits all” approach. Personalized programming is created with the end goal of healing the underlying causes of the individual’s condition rather than simply treating symptoms. Through continued support and real healing, clients have a much better chance for a successful long-term recovery. Recovery Allies’ services are ideal for those who either cannot afford or commit to inpatient care, or for those transitioning out of a residential program and trying to stay clean.

Recovery Allies specializes in mentoring, interventions and transportation. Mentoring is provided by team members with a personal knowledge of addiction from both first-hand experience and in the field. Clients typically talk or text their mentor on a daily basis and meet in-person between one and three times a week for up to three hours. In addition, mentors perform urine drug tests and provide progress reports to family members regularly. Clients also receive coaching for relapse prevention, setting goals and life skills. Some team members are trained in evidence-based method of Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help client resolve ambivalence.

Interventions usually take place over the course of several meetings, and focus on family dynamics and the goal of a long-term recovery. Clients going through an intervention participate in mentoring and receive case management services. Finally, Recovery Allies provides clients with transportation to and from treatment as well as family visits and interventions.
