Treatment and Staff
While many clients transition from the residential program (which is for men only) into the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), the PHP is an ideal fit for individuals that cannot commit to an inpatient curriculum but still require systemic therapy. Rather than offering a “one size fits all” approach, Recovery Acres employs a bio-psycho-social strategy to treatment that specializes in treating the underlying cause of addiction. As such, clients engage in a care plan tailored to their unique needs and goals, as determined by a comprehensive psychological assessment performed by an intake team. While the facility does provides therapy and psychoeducation for clients with co-occurring disorders such as depression and trauma, those individuals are still required to follow a prescribed treatment in order to participate in the program.
Male and female clients attend separate day programs at Recovery Acres. PHP for men lasts between three and six weeks, with therapy from 9 am to 7:15 pm, Monday through Friday. Recovery Acres integrates 12-step immersion, psychological assessment, individual and group therapy, aftercare preparation as well as discussion groups with a focus on relapse prevention.
The women’s program is separated into two phases, the first being a PHP lasting for two weeks from 9 am to 3 pm on weekdays. Clients engage in psychoeducation classes and individual and group therapy, in addition to 12-step meetings. The second phase is a 10-week program dedicated to relapse prevention. Women attend a weekly group session that covers a range of topics including awareness of triggers, accountability and mental health strategies. Child care is available for mothers in the program.
Recovery Acres employs clinicians with Master’s degrees, sobriety coaches, therapists and a PhD-level psychologist. Clients in need of medication management can receive referrals.
Recovery Acres offers transitional housing for clients who have completed the residential phase, but still need structure and a strong peer community. Many former residents of the 1835 House go on to live in transitional housing, and are required to attend a minimum of one AA meeting a week. Many clients stay in transitional housing for up to two years as they rebuild their foundation through school and work. Everyone in Recovery Acres’ transitional housing must continue working with the team therapists.
Recovery Acres is an accredited, non-profit treatment organization that offers individualized residential, PHP and outpatient services as well as transitional housing. A real credit to the Calgary community, Recovery is unique in that clients are encouraged to stay for however long is necessary to meet their needs. While a 12-step immersion is the mainstay of the programming, the facility also offers a host of complementary therapies including relapse prevention and psychoeducation. For clients in Alberta seeking a comprehensive program, Recovery Acres is an excellent affordable option.
