Recovering, Together

Imagine you’re about to embark on something new, difficult and scary. Who would you want by your side? Most people would turn to their partner or spouse for support, and yet many rehab programs require clients to be separated from their partners.

However, the couples rehab program offered at Capo By The Sea allow partners to get sober, together. Through the program both individuals can confront their addiction, while also focusing on understanding how addictive behavior has shaped their relationship. Rather than working on their relationship after returning from rehab, couples in the program are able to focus on sobriety while building a new life together, strengthening their relationship and establishing a path toward a healthier future.

Working Toward Sobriety, Together

While it’s common for rehab programs to provide family therapy and try to address addiction and codependence, the couples rehab program at Capo by The Sea is different because it is designed for circumstances where both partners are addicted to drugs or alcohol. Each person receives and individual treatment program, and the couple also works together in behavioral couples therapy. During these sessions the couple make a recovery contract together, setting goals for the future, evaluating the progress that they have made, and discussing any problems that have arise. The therapist also assigns homework that is meant to strengthen the relationship.

Establishing A New Normal

As part of the program, couples learn how to love and support each other in healthy ways, without abusing substances. A study by the National Institute of Health found that couples where both partners abuse substances “cared for each other similarly to the ways that non-drug-using couples care for their intimate partners. However, most also cared by helping each other avoid the symptoms of drug withdrawal.” Learning how to express love in healthier ways can help both individuals maintain their sobriety after rehab.

For many couples, sharing drugs or alcohol can be an important part of bonding or relaxing together. As part of couples rehab, partners learn how to replace rituals that revolve around drugs and alcohol with healthier options that allow them to strengthen their relationship through positive means. They are also able to reframe negative patterns in favor of more effective communications.

Leaning on Each Other for Support

Couples who go through drug and alcohol rehab together have one giant advantage after they return home: They have learned the same tools of sobriety and know how to use them to support each other. Couples who get sober together don’t have to worry about educating their partner about their new lifestyle, because the partner has been there every step of the way. Because of this, both people speak the same language of recovery and can help each other if one starts to falter. In addition, many partners feel an obligation to help the other stay sober after they have done the hard work of completing rehab together.

Having Fun Along The Way

Going through rehab as a couple isn’t easy, but Capo By The Sea offers holistic therapies that let couples take time to unwind and have fun together amid the more intense therapy sessions. Couples can get massages, do yoga, or try art or equine therapy together during their stay, engaging in new, positive activities that they can enjoy together.
