recoRECO Review

RECO is a substance abuse treatment organization located in beautiful Delray Beach, Florida. Its goal is to help people heal from the physical, emotional and spiritual trauma of addiction and co-occurring disorders. The facilities offer a full continuum of care, including detox, residential treatment, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) with a sober living option. RECO treats all clients who are 18 years or older, however, the average age is 21 to 35.

RECO (which is short for recovery) was founded in August 2011 as RECO Institute, the sober living branch of the organization. After several years of building a successful therapeutic housing community, RECO expanded to include RECO Intensive, the treatment branch. Today, RECO is comprised of a clinical facility, five residential homes and a ranch that specializes in equine therapy for addicts and alcoholics.

Accommodations and Food

The detox and residential programs are both housed in the large, modern clinical facility. Men and women reside in gender-specific semi-private bedrooms that are furnished with twin beds, closets, luxurious bedding and linens. Adjoining bathrooms contain tubs and showers. Comfortable sitting areas and chic décor create an inviting atmosphere in the living spaces. All meals are provided and served at set times in the dining room. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated upon request.

The five sober living homes can accommodate a total of 36 clients, with two houses for 12 women and three houses for 24 men. Homes include full kitchens, washers and dryers and attractive furnishings that are clean and comfortable. Residents share bedrooms and bathrooms with at least one other person and build life skills by shopping for groceries and preparing their own breakfasts and dinners. Catered lunches are served daily during treatment at the clinical facility for those in PHP.

Treatment and Staff

RECO offers individualized programs for every client. An assessment determines where new clients fit on the continuum of care. Those requiring detox begin with medically-monitored care for typically three to five days. During which, staff administers safe and appropriate medications to help clients feel as comfortable as possible. Those with co-occurring disorders receive psychological support and medication management. After detox, clients transition to the residential program for a minimum of 60 days before stepping down to one of the outpatient options.

PHP clients move into one of the sober homes and are transported to the clinical facility five days a week. This program is six hours a day and consists of multiple group sessions, as well as at least one individual session a week. Clients are also required to attend AA/NA meetings. Peer support meetings are offered on-site in the evenings for clients in the sober living.

After about 30 days, clients can transition to the IOP, which meets three to five days a week for three hours of group therapy. This program usually lasts six weeks, though durations can vary. The standard outpatient program follows and serves as a step-down from more structured treatment. Clients in this phase are encouraged to start looking for jobs or applying for school. Typically, outpatient clients attend group once a week and one individual session a month.

There are groups that are specifically dedicated to trauma-informed care, pain management and co-occurring disorders if needed. Therapy methods in all programs include psychoeducationCBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and holistic approaches like meditation, nutritional counseling and massage therapy.

The staff is made up holistic practitioners, an MD, a RN and Master’s-level therapists whose credentials include LPC, CADC and LCSW.

Extras

RECO offers a free family program for loved ones over 18, which includes group therapy and educational sessions.

Clients also have access to a variety of therapeutic excursions in addition to equine therapy at RECO Ranch. These include volunteering at a local animal hospital and rescue facility, a community garden and participating in a ropes course or escape room activity.

In Summary

RECO offers a unique program of structured addiction treatment in a thriving recovery community. The program provides plenty of choices for care and a good mix of evidence-based methods and peer support. This is a great choice for those looking to begin their recovery in a beautiful location that incorporates a full continuum of detox, residential, sober living and outpatient care.
