The Basics
RECAP’s New Life Manor is a men’s only halfway house that offers residential treatment in Newburgh, New York. Its programs are designed to help clients transition from long-term residential or intensive treatment into by providing life skills training in preparation for eventual sober or independent living situations. Treatment uses the 12-step philosophy and relapse prevention techniques in addition to medication management for co-occurring disorders.
Accommodations and Food
Clients reside in a historic stone manor that was built in 1900. The two-story home can accommodate up to 24 clients in bedrooms that sleep four. There are three full bathrooms throughout the facility in addition to a recently renovated dining room and state-of-the-art kitchen. The manor sits on an acre of private land surrounded by greenery and well-maintained gardens in a quiet residential neighborhood.
During their stay, clients receive vocational training, like cooking classes, as well as resume building and job interviewing skills training. They are also encouraged to do volunteer work within the community. Clients have ample opportunities to exercise by participating in the fitness group led by a staff member several times a week. Acupuncture treatments are also available.
While all food is provided, part of the program requires that the men to learn how to prepare meals for themselves to build independent living skills.
Treatment and Staff
Typically clients living at the manor attend day treatment at RECAP’s outpatient facility. Treatment consists of group and individual therapy and AA or NA meetings. Relapse prevention and psychoeducation classes offer health and nutritional information in addition to educating the client about the effects of long-term addiction. Treatment plans are individualized and clients are able to access services like medication management and medical exams.
Therapeutic approaches are evidence-based and include CBT and DBT, but holistic modalities like art and movement therapy are also offered. Counseling sessions address trauma and aim to teach the client how to identify triggers and make healthier life choices, develop better communication skills and repair broken relationships.
There is a 24-hour staff at this facility, along a clinical staff of CADCs. Many of the staff members are sober themselves and have participated in the New Life Manor program.
