Rebecca’s House Review

Based in Orange County’s Lake Forest, California, Rebecca’s House is a behavioral health organization that offers extended residential care, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), as well as transitional housing for anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorders. Founded in 1999 by Rebecca Cooper, who is an LMFT, author, speaker and eating disorder recovery advocate, Rebecca’s House was the first eating disorder rehab to develop a long-term residential program model for primary care. This level of care is designed to support those who have completed an inpatient program or whose eating disorder has not yet progressed to require the higher residential level of care.

Accommodations and Food

Residents stay in an upscale home in Lake Forest. Accommodations are available for up to eight women at a time, and residents have roommates and shared bathrooms. Women can enjoy pretty lounge areas, a TV room and a workout room with exercise equipment.

During the week, residents walk to Rebecca House for meals that are served in the facility’s cafeteria. On weekends, residents purchase food and prepare meals at the house, with staff assistance for nutrition and meal-planning. Nutritional staff, including a registered dietician, assists clients in approaching mealtimes with more informed choices, decreased fears and greater confidence.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Rebecca’s House is typically divided into two three-month phases, for a total of six months. During Phase One, clients have six hours of group therapy each day, 10 hours of supportive group therapy each week, one hour of weekly individual therapy with a counselor and one hour of individual nutrition counseling. In Phase Two, clients identify educational and professional goals and begin volunteering, attending school or working part-time. Residents also begin working with a recovery coach on their post-treatment plans. All programs employ evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT and EMDR. Groups cover a range of additional topics including psychoeducation, relapse prevention, spirituality, social and communication skills and co-occurring issues.

The team at Rebecca’s House includes licensed therapists, Master’s-level counselors, a Doctoral-level psychotherapist, an EMDR therapist, an exercise physiologist, a registered dietitian and a consulting team of medical professionals that includes a physician, a physician’s assistant and a psychiatrist.

Extras

Every other weekend, the residents decide collectively on a special recreational activity—such as a movie outing or sports event. For aftercare, clients may be referred to Rebecca’s outpatient programs.

In Summary

Rebecca House Extended Care Program offers long-term residential treatment in which residents have ample opportunity to practice new life skills in the program’s supportive counseling sessions. By beginning employment and going on extended off-site visits while in treatment, residents receive counseling support and guidance when the stressors of independent living challenge their new coping skills.
