Rebecca’s House Recovery Living

The Basics

Based in Orange County’s Lake Forest, California, Rebecca’s House was founded in 1999 by Rebecca Cooper, who is an LMFT, author, speaker and eating disorder recovery advocate. This behavioral health organization offers extended residential care, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), as well as transitional housing for those recovering from anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorders. Rebecca’s House Recovery Living is a network of three upscale homes that offer transitional living support to women 18 years and over who have completed primary eating disorder treatment, do not require the intensity of a residential stay or are participating in one of the Rebecca’s House outpatient programs.

Accommodations and Amenities

The three Rebecca’s House Recovery Living homes are located in upscale residential neighborhoods in close proximity to the clinical offices in Lake Forest. All three houses are modern and beautifully decorated, with space for a total of 18 women, with all bedrooms shared between two residents. Rooms have twin or full-sized beds, dressers and shared closet space. The homes also feature shared living areas with TVs, outdoor lounge areas and fully equipped kitchens.

During their stay, clients are served three healthy meals a day, with menus designed by on-staff nutritionists and dietitians. Because developing a healthy relationship with food is integral in the program, residents must also spend time in the kitchen learning about the basics of nutrition and how to cook.

Rules and Regulations

Residents at Rebecca’s House Recovery Living is designed for those wanting a safe eating environment and recovery community support after hours, but who are stable enough to be pursuing academic and vocational goals during the day. The average stay is 90 days to six months and clients must be sober and actively working on their eating disorder recovery. They are encouraged to build life skills and participate in tasks that will help them gain confidence and self-esteem like counter work, school or physical fitness activities. The women are provided with support to develop living skills, such as grocery shopping and food preparation.

Clients receive guidance from a live-in house manager to learn to employ positive coping skills in place of the eating disorder. They also have access to the team at Rebecca’s House, which includes a dietician, licensed therapists and consulting medical professionals. Residents must attend a weekly individual living-skills session to review their progress and a weekly community house meeting.

The women are strongly encouraged to develop a routine that includes self-care. This can include self-help meetings, therapy, yoga and meditation.
