Reading Health System of Reading, Pennsylvania offers short-term inpatient and outpatient substance abuse and co-occurring disorders treatment for adolescents and adults. The individualized treatments employ evidence-based and holistic approaches through detox, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and step-down services, including aftercare.

Treatment and Staff

The programs for adolescents, adults and seniors vary slightly and are catered to meet the needs of each individual. Treatment begins with an in-depth assessment so the staff can develop a personalized plan. The adult tracks include detox, if needed (usually a seven-day, inpatient stay at the hospital), followed by the PHP, which meets Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 2 pm. The adolescent track is much less intense; it does not offer detox and its PHP meets only two days a week for a couple of weeks.

Programs work within the structure of group and individual counseling, using DBT, art therapy, nature therapy, animal-assisted therapy, trauma-informed carepsychoeducation and medication management (if needed). Some harm reduction options are also available.

The PHP commences mostly in a group setting, with one individual session a week. Groups address topics such as addiction as a disease and its lasting effects on the physical body and mental health, as well as relapse prevention techniques, coping skills and aftercare planning. Once a client shows progress, they can step down to less treatment days and hours.

Reading Health System offers specialty programs for clients with a dual diagnosis, which offers psychiatric assessments, electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) and medication management. While it does not facilitate 12-step meetings,  clients are encouraged to attend outside AA/NA for additional support.

The staff at Reading Health System includes physicians, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists and LCSWs.

Extras

Reading Health System also offers a tobacco cessation program and an ongoing weekly aftercare group.
