The Basics
Founded in 1970 by a group of local parents who were concerned about the rampage of substance abuse in their community, REACH Project is has locations in the northern California cities of Brentwood, Antioch and Oakley. Their outpatient substance abuse treatment program for adults is funded by Contra Costa County. Besides adult outpatient care, REACH Project works hand in hand with local law enforcement to provide diversion programs as alternatives to to incarceration for adolescents with first time misdemeanor offenses.
Treatment and Staff
While the outpatient protocol caters to criminal justice clients, self-referred individuals are also welcome to attend. Treatment length is typically six months. Clients receive a complete intake evaluation with a counselor. Prior to admission, drug and alcohol testing is required. The cost is $25. Weekly treatment includes between one and three group therapy sessions. Individual counseling can be scheduled according to client’s needs.
Group topics include substance abuse, stress management and relapse prevention. At REACH Project, a 12-step based protocol is implemented and clients are required to attend a minimum of three weekly AA/NA meetings. The groups are co-ed and range between four and 15 clients per session, with six licensed counselors on staff. REACH Project offers adolescent outpatient care. Treatment includes a psychoeducational group approach, along with talk therapy. Topics include stress management, recovery concepts, peer pressure, developing refusal skills and substance abuse education.
The staff is comprised of case managers LCSWs, CADCs and psychologists. Those in need of dual diagnosis support will be referred to local psychiatrists.
Extras
The school-based REACH Program is comprised of behavioral workshops for students. The workshops teach students skills that include resilience to peer pressure, stress management, school-related goal achievement, and healthy relationships.
In Summary
REACH Project is keen on battling substance abuse, and on providing no-cost services. Aside from the drug testing fee, the outpatient care is free. This program might work best for those seeking low cost aftercare services. Clients who need more intensive support will want to combine outpatient attendance with sober living or another recovery protocol. Overall, REACH Project offers accessible, affordable 12-step based community treatment.
