The Basics
Racing for Recovery was founded by Todd Crandell in 2001 to offer an alternative treatment program for individuals and families struggling with the pitfalls of substance abuse. Based in the Greater Toledo, Ohio vicinity, there are a number of treatment services offered through Racing for Recovery but the primary method is promoting an overall healthy lifestyle through fitness and recovery. Racing for Recovery joined forces with Mercy Health in Ohio to provide a treatment program that’s entirely individualized and holistic. In addition to the fitness and wellness element, it also offers several group support meetings, education and mentoring opportunities on an outpatient basis.
Treatment and Staff
Racing for Recovery’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) runs five days a week during the morning, afternoons and evenings. The IOP consists of both group and individual therapy with an emphasis on education and wellness. Clients address past traumas, and begin to identify the root from which their addiction stemmed and how it has affected them physically, mentally and emotionally. Treatment at Racing for Recovery is not based on 12-step principles; instead it uses a CBT approach to zero in on what event or experience may have led to seeking out an escape through drugs and alcohol. Though the treatment doesn’t incorporate the 12 steps, clients are always encouraged to use any method to help them remain sober, and can attend AA/NA meeting for additional support.
Clients can expect to acquire a number of helpful tools to remain in sobriety. In addition to counseling, they participate in yoga or running, and learn how to prepare healthy meals. There are group run/walks every Sunday through the local park followed up by a lifestyle group meeting along with fitness classes during the week.
The staff is led by founder Todd Crandall, who is an LPCC and LICDC. Other staff members are LPC, CADC and mentors. Several members of the staff are former clients of the program.
Extras
There are several support groups offered throughout the week for loved ones of the clients.
In addition to the counseling and fitness offered at Racing for Recovery, there are interventions, court ordered assessments, motivational speaker events and online counseling available.
In Summary
Racing for Recovery uses science backed methods for treatment that proves the correlation between fitness and mental health. This facility provides an alternative approach to substance abuse treatment in a very supportive environment. It’s a wonderful resource for the Toledo community at large.
