QHCThe Basics

Queens Hospital Center provides outpatient substance abuse treatment services for men and women. Located in Jamaica, Queens, QHC has been serving New York residents since 1935. All treatment programming is available day and night, allowing clients to access care on their own schedule. Programs include the chemical dependency outpatient program, a DUI program and an HIV/AIDS positive support program.

Treatment and Staff

All clients enrolled in the chemical dependency program at QHC  receive individualized treatment. Prior to treatment, all clients are evaluated by staff with a bio-psycho-social assessment to determine the severity of their condition. A treatment plan is developed between the individual and their counselor that addresses length of treatment, required therapy attendance and goals. Each client meets individually with case managers and LCSWs to ensure all appointments are kept, medication is properly distributed and clients stay focused on their treatment plans.

Recovery plans vary, but all clients attend treatment at the clinic from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm Monday through Friday. New clients are encouraged to attend a newcomer group held in the evenings. Group therapy occurs daily and is conducted by staff psychologists. Individual therapy is conducted by psychologists and CSACs on an as-needed basis. All therapies use CBT techniques. If a client requires further psychological testing, the treatment staff can arrange for more intensive care.

QHC staff includes physicians and nurses who can assist with medical health needs including medication management. While detox is not available, staff provide referrals to local clinics. Clients have access to on-site 12-step meetings and are encouraged to attend multiple times per week.

Clients with DUI charges can attend QHC’s 14-week program geared toward adults who are eligible to get their driving privileges reinstated. These individuals meet two nights per week for group therapy, alcohol and drug education and individual therapy with a case manager.

For clients struggling with substance abuse and HIV/AIDS, the Ryan White Hard Reduction/Relapse Prevention Program is available. Group and individual therapy is focused on relapse prevention techniques, emotional support and sex education.

Additionally, QHC has a family program targeted toward the loved ones of clients in need of counseling and educational support. CSWs focus on creating a safe home environment for clients to return to. Drug and alcohol education and outside resources for families are provided.

Extras

QHC has activity therapists on staff who conduct creative groups for clients enrolled in the chemical dependency program. Music therapy, art therapy and theater groups help clients to better socialize and express emotions.
