Queen Anne’s County Department of Health Review

Queen Anne’s County of Department Health treats substance abuse and co-occurring issues. This organization has two locations in Maryland—Centreville and Kent Island. Its an outpatient program that offers care to both adults and adolescents, utilizing traditional therapy and the 12 steps. Thanks to sliding scale costs, treatment is accessible to all.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment begins with an assessment from which an individualized treatment plan is devised. Depending on the severity of their addiction, clients are placed in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or the outpatient program. Dual diagnosis support is available but those who require detox are referred another facility.

IOP offers treatment three times a week, for three hour sessions. This includes one hour of individual therapy and a couple hours of group therapy. Group topics vary depending on the age group, but may include an introduction to the 12 steps, relapse prevention, peer pressure, self esteem, the disease concept of addiction, family recovery and behavioral issues. Evidence based therapies such as CBT are frequently used and drug and alcohol education is provided. Clients are encouraged to attend outside AA/NA meetings, but not required.

The outpatient program provides treatment once a week, for three hours. This level of care includes group and individual therapy, as well as drug and alcohol education. Topics discussed are similar to the IOP program, but the sessions delve further into defense mechanisms, codependency and stress management.

The staff includes nurses, doctors and CSACs.

Extras

Family therapy is available is both of the programs.

Breathalyzers and urine analysis tests are used as measures of compliance for clients who are court-ordered. Assistance with interventions and tobacco cessation are also available.

This organization offers parenting classes, alcohol and drug education workshops, a video loan library, drug-free workshop training, awareness campaigns and mini grants for local community substance abuse prevention projects, like DARE.

In Summary

Queen Anne’s County of Department Health offers outpatient treatment rooted in education, prevention and talk therapy. When it comes to the 12 steps, its recovery philosophy is integrated into the treatment plan but not forced upon clients.
