PuyallupThe Basics

Located in Tacoma, Washington, Puyallup Tribal Treatment Center strives to bring culturally appropriate, high quality health care to American Indians and Alaskan Natives. This facility was the first health clinic in 1976 to enter into a “self-determination” agreement with the Indian Health Service—which means they agree to work in conjunction with the federal government to provide services on tribal lands. These outpatient treatment programs are geared toward substance abuse and gambling addictions, using talk therapy and the 12 steps to help clients recover.

Treatment and Staff

This facility offers two outpatient plans for adults and adolescents— the Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and Outpatient. In order to receive care through this organization, the client must be an American Indian or Alaskan Native living in Pierce County, Washington, a child of an American Indian or Alaskan Native or a non-native woman pregnant with an American Indian or Alaskan Native child. An initial assessment is made to determine the eligibility and treatment needs of each person. Detox is not available on site, but clients can be referred to a nearby clinic.

The outpatient programs are separated by age and include dual diagnosis support for those with co-occurring mental health issues. The IOP program involves three group sessions per week, plus an hour of individual counseling. The group sizes range from 15 to 20 and treatment length depends on the individual. Group topics include relapse prevention, anger management, employment, introduction to the 12 steps and life skills. Evidence-based treatment modalities such as CBT and DBT are used in both group and individual setting. Once the client completes IOP, they can step down into the Outpatient program. This final step of treatment consists of one group session per week, plus an hour of individual counseling.

The staff includes doctors, therapists, psychiatrists and CADCs.

Extras

Each year, an alumni picnic is held to celebrate how far the clients have come. This fun, sober event brings the community together to share their progress in recovery.

In addition to offering outpatient program for substance abuse, the facility also has a program for gambling addiction. This also consists of group and individual therapy.

In addition to offering addiction treatment, the Puyallup Tribal Treatment Center offers educational classes on anger management, grief and loss, parenting support and stress management. They also share traditional cultural teachings through song and dance, and regalia making.

In Summary

Puyallup Tribal Treatment Center is a culturally-specific program that provides an important service for the community. Thanks to free treatment for eligible adults and adolescents, recovery is made accessible to those who can’t afford private care. With two levels of outpatient treatment, clients can slowly reenter their everyday lives with a strong recovery support network.
