The Basics
Putnam Family and Community Services was founded in 1997 in Carmel, New York, a small town near the Connecticut border. The non-profit organization offers outpatient substance abuse treatment to adult male and female residents of Hudson Valley and Eastern Connecticut. It accepts self-referred and court-orders clients.
Treatment and Staff
The treatment process beings with an in-person assessment where clients discuss their substance abuse history and a counselor determines the level of care that is needed. Those who might require more comprehensive care may be referred to an outside residential and/or detox program. But if deemed a good fit for Putnam, counselors develop an individualized treatment plan, consisting of group and individual counseling that employs a variety of techniques including relapse prevention, education and peer support. Groups are usually capped at 15 clients. Individual therapy is scheduled on an as-needed basis.
The exact length and intensity of the treatment is based on individual need but all clients are regularly drug tested and screened. Although Putnam is not 12-step based, counselors do recommend local AA/NA meetings for additional support.
Clients with a dual diagnosis are referred to the organization’s psychiatrist and mental health counselors. Those in need of a higher level of care are referred to Putnam’s mental health clinic for further treatment.
The counselors at Putnam are all CADCs.
