Costa RicaPure Life By Aspiro Review

Located in beautiful Costa Rica, Pure Life By Aspiro offers a holistic treatment plan including wilderness therapy for men and women aged 18 to 28. Since 2004, the Utah-based Pure Life has provided an English-speaking program that offers adventure therapy, cultural immersion, wellness and community services for those struggling with substance abuse and addiction.

Accommodations and Food

As part of the adventure therapy, clients often hike, bike, or travel to outdoor locations at which they set up camp. Tents are the primary source of shelter when away from basecamp, and they share a communal sleeping space when there. All equipment and necessary gear is provided, and participants may take this home at the completion of the program. Food is locally grown, sourced and nutritious. Rice and beans, an excellent source of macronutrients, always accompany the fresh fruit and vegetables. Clients are responsible for preparing their own meals, which are eaten communally.

Treatment and Staff

The average stay is 90 days, with many staying an additional 50 to 120 as part of the extended care program. Clients are immersed in an adventure therapy and wellness program that is highly structured and holistic. Pure Life aims to treat substance abuse, trauma, gaming abuse and mood disorders like anxiety and depression. Issues dealing with adoption and attachment are also addressed, and special focus is given to develop social skills, positive body image, self-esteem and to resolve family conflict. Individual and group therapy sessions, led by licensed, Master’s-level therapists, tackle these issues.

Adventure therapy makes up the bulk of treatment at Pure Life, and the gorgeous Costa Rican setting is host to many activities. Some of these components include white-water rafting, sea kayaking, rock climbing, rappelling, surfing, backpacking and scuba diving. Each adventure takes place over the course of five or six days, with clients fully supervised by skilled, trained and accredited staff. Certification courses are also offered. Through these, clients complete wilderness first aid, swift water rescue and a technical ROPES course to ensure safety during all activities.

While detox is not offered, clients requiring dual diagnosis support are treated with medication management through the assistance of a psychiatrist. The client and their family must arrange transport to Costa Rica, but Pure Life offers assistance and guidance with flight, visa and vaccination information.

Extras

The cultural immersion aspect of the program is somewhat unique to Pure Life. Clients are given opportunity to stay with a local family for a period of time, providing them with a distinctly different lifestyle and perspective. Clients also participate in community outreach activities, helping to foster compassion.

In Summary

Pure Life By Aspiro offers wilderness therapy in the exotic and beautiful Costa Rica. Young clients are offered traditional therapeutic modalities and a wide range of adventure therapies. Although the flights can be costly, depending on where in the world you’re flying in from, the cost of treatment is relatively low. The extended stay option also means clients can immerse themselves in a new, cultural landscape and build a solid foundation recovery.
