Punanai Centre Review
The Punanai Centre, which recently re-opened after renovations, is one of the two men’s residential addiction treatment facilities operated by Renascent Centers. Located in Toronto, Canada, this facility offers 12-step based treatment in a home-like atmosphere. The care provided at the Punanai Centre is comprehensive and employs evidence-based therapy methods. Open since 1991, this facility has provided abstinence-based care for over 40 years and boasts high success rates.
Accommodations and Food
The Punanai Centre housing facility accommodates between 25 and 30 men and is located in a comfortable residential neighborhood in Toronto. The facility is a large, two-story red brick building that looks like an apartment building or school from a street view, but the inside offers a sophisticated and elegant setting. Bedrooms that are shared between three or four clients in full beds and furnished with nightstands and lamps. There are several bathrooms throughout the facility some that are full and some half. The full bathrooms have standard showers with no tub and a little space for storage. The living rooms have large leather couches and chairs and a marble fireplace. The large dining room has round tables and clients have access to coffee and tea throughout the day.
Three meals a day are prepared and served on-site by staff cooks. Nutrition plays a big part of the treatment at this facility, and the staff makes sure to offer menus that are high in nutritional value. There are also fruit and snacks set out during the day, but if the client has a hankering for something not offered, they are permitted to purchase their own snacks.
Treatment and Staff
There is an initial medical and psychological assessment that takes place at the beginning of treatment, and medication management can be arranged. The programs are abstinence-based and those every client has to enter into the program free of substances. Those who need a detox program prior to their admission are offered referrals to an outside agency. Treatment is rooted in the 12-step philosophy and typically lasts between 28 and 35 days.
A daily schedule includes group therapy sessions, all of which are lead by a male therapist. There are also individual sessions offered and clients are permitted to have as many as they’d like, as well as choose the therapist they’d like to work with during their stay. Therapy includes CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Topics include relapse prevention, coping skills and anger management techniques. There is an emphasis on improving physical and mental health, so daily walks, healthy diets and stabilizing sleeping habits is also part of the overall wellness plan. There are daily AA or NA meetings that every client must attend. Evening meetings are off-site and the clients are encouraged to begin to grow a support network in the community.
The staff at Punanai Centre are highly trained in the field of addiction and have accreditations like CADC and LADC. There are also peer counselors and residential staff.
Extras
There is a 15-week aftercare program that consists of two therapy sessions weekly for the first five weeks and steps down to one session per week for the remainder. An alumni program is also offered and gives graduates of the program a life-long recovery resource.
There are several family programs at the facility including an intensive four-day workshop for children and parents, and a weekend program for family members. Both of these programs offer education and counseling services.
In Summary
The treatment though Renascent at all their facilities is client focused and solution-based. There are many clients who step through the doors of a rehab and have no idea what to expect, but these programs put it all on the table. The Punanai Centre works to not only provide the tools for success but to lessen the anxiety surrounding the process.
