puente house-google mapsThe Basics

Founded in 1993, Puente House operates three gender-specific sober living houses in Covina, California. The houses all offer highly structured, 12-step oriented atmospheres for men and women in recovery. Their mission is to help alcoholics and addicts build new clean and sober lives. Not only is Puente House located just 20 miles away from Los Angeles, but also the house is within walking distance of more than 60 12-step meetings per week.

Accommodations and Amenities

There are three Colonial-style houses, of which two provide lodgings for 47 men and one houses 12 women. Rooms accommodate between two and three clients. Layouts vary, but typically one triple-occupancy room includes a bunk bed and a twin bed, dresser and storage space. Clients are responsible for their own food. Meals can be prepared in fully equipped kitchens.

Rules and Regulations

Clients must have completed detox prior to entry. Length of stay is determined per a client’s needs and there is no limit to how long a resident can live at Puente House. Upon entry, residents undergo a “blackout” period, which lasts two weeks. During this time, they are escorted on and off the property, phone usage is limited and visitors are not permitted.

Requirements for all men and women include attending two daily 12-step meetings, acquiring and establishing an active relationship with a sponsor, performing household chores, having two weekly AA/NA commitments and participating in weekly house meetings. Those who are not employed must perform regular community service. Many of the principles and practices that Puente House observes are those that are outlined in the Big Book. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. At Puente House, there is a zero tolerance for those testing positive.

Extras

Clients often attend outpatient treatment at the nearby Aurora Charter Oak Hospital, which offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).

The Puente House Foundation provides support to financially challenged men and women in recovery. Those who are indigent will be given assistance with food, clothing and the cost of their stay. For the past 13 years, the Foundation has provided an annual Thanksgiving Day dinner to the needy in the community who are in recovery.

In Summary

Puente House offers a highly structured, 12-step way of life to men and women in recovery. For those who are on the fence out being part of a 12-step program after rehab, this is not a great choice. On the other hand, for men and women who are keen on doing their steps, and who crave a spiritual approach, Puente House is the right spot.
