The Basics
Psychiatric Care Center was founded in 2000 in Redding, California by psychiatrist Dr. Thomas J. Andrews. The organization provides outpatient substance abuse and mental health treatment to adult residents of northern California struggling with addiction and/or co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
The Psychiatric Care Center offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that lasts for 10 weeks and meets three days a week for three hours at a time. When clients enter the program, they may have an initial psychiatric exam to see if they qualify for the organization’s mental health services.
While treatment is primarily conducted in a group setting, counselors aim to address each client’s individual needs in using education, sharing, relapse prevention strategies and CBT. Clients are under the direct supervision of a psychiatrist who monitors progress while counselors aim to teach coping and decision-making skills. Family therapy is also available with client consent. For clients with a dual diagnosis, additional psychiatric support is available.
Although the Psychiatric Care Center is not 12-step based, counselors do recommend that clients attend local AA and NA meetings to supplement their recovery.
The substance abuse staff consists of LCSWs and CATCs. On the psychiatric side, there is an MD, registered nurse, psychiatrist and mental health therapists available.
Extras
Psychiatric Care Center also runs New Leaf Academy, a chemical dependency IOP for adolescents. Treatment is offered in the afternoon and evening to accommodate academic schedules.
Aftercare is available for clients who have completed any of the organization’s outpatient programs. Groups meet twice a month and focuses on relapse prevention and transitioning back into society.

The mental health component and strong medical staff offers solid care for clients with co-occurring disorders. The adolescent IOP allows teenage clients to attend treatment without disrupting their academic schedules.
