Providence Rhode IslandThe Basics

The Providence Center is a network of mental health and substance abuse treatment facilities throughout the state of Rhode Island. The original center opened in 1969 and has since become a member of the Care New England Health System. The Adult Intensive Outpatient Center (IOP) is one of 12 facilities located in Providence that also offers specialized treatment programs to meet the specific needs of women requiring perinatal services while they recover from substance abuse and addiction-related issues. Gender-specific residential services are available in Burrillville and Cranston as are additional services including integrated primary and behavioral care, family services, crisis and emergency care as well as programs for adolescents and teens.

Treatment and Staff

All clients submit to a bio-psycho-social screening that determines the acuity of their dependency. There are no detox services available at this specific facility, but clients requiring medical detox prior to treatment are seen for primary treatment at Providence Center. The IOP track is facilitated three days per week for three hours each day. Clients learn how to live healthy lives without the use of drugs and alcohol. Dual diagnosis support is also available for those with co-occurring mental health disorders.

During the treatment period, clients attend both group and individual therapy. All groups and individual sessions utilize evidence-based practices that focus on the specific issues that women face. Some groups are psycho-educational to inform clients about alcoholism and the nature of addiction. Topics include domestic violence, emotional abuse, development of healthy coping skills and relapse prevention. All staff are female to ensure the comfort of clients. Services are also available in Spanish.

In addition, individuals with co-occurring disorders may be seen by staff Psychiatrists for medication management and prescriptions. The staff also work diligently with clients to ensure their bodily health improves along with their mental health. HIV/STD screenings and education are available as are special programs for pregnant women and mothers are available through the Project Link program, a post-IOP track available for women who are up to a year postpartum. Clients may enroll in Project Link or step down to the standard outpatient, known as the Women’s Day Program. These programs are led by the same team of mental health professionals that oversee the IOP and also include parenting classes.

Staff credentials include CSWs, CADCs and Psychiatrists. Access to additional services including medical care and vocational services is available. All clients must remain abstinent during their treatment period and random drug tests may be administered. Attending 12-step support groups is required to supplement recovery.

Extras

Aftercare planning is available through the client’s case manager. References for special sober living environments with accommodations for children and infants are available. In addition, clients may recieve babysitting services while they are in treatment. Other programs include child and family services, integrated primary and behavioral care, wellness, employment, crisis and emergency care.

In Summary

The Providence Center’s special services are ideal for women who are chemically dependent, women with children and expectant mothers. Following completion of a comprehensive IOP, clients may transfer to the Women’s Day or Project Link programs to better suit their recovery needs. All services utilize evidence based methods and aim to treat the body, mind and spirit.
