The Basics
Providence Adult Outpatient Behavioral Health provides an Outpatient Program and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The adult outpatient program has two locations in Portland, Oregon—one on the east side at the Providence Portland Medical Center and the other on the west side at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. Providence has been a leader in treating chemical dependency and mental health issues since 1978, and prides itself on being the third-largest not-for-profit health organization in the country serving the communities of Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Montana and California.
Treatment and Staff
Potential clients undergo an assessment facilitated by a psychologist. Eligible clients must be 18 years of age with chemical dependency as the primary diagnosis—but dual diagnosis support is provided by a psychiatrist who also manages medication.
The IOP meets 10 hours per week with one hour of individual therapy. Clients attend individual and group sessions, as well as educational classes. Groups use CBT and MI and topics include alcohol awareness, addiction and brain functions, identifying triggers, family dynamics and building a support network. IOP is typically six weeks in duration. There is also a four week traditional outpatient program offered as a step down with groups meeting twice per week. Topics are similar to those in IOP, with a special focus on relapse prevention. Outpatient is traditionally four weeks—longer if necessary.
The Providence treatment staff consists of CDACs, Master’s-level therapists, psychiatrists and MFTs.
Extras
Providence DWI and DUI classes for those who have been court-ordered to seek treatment. In addition, family therapy and family education is offered for loved ones who wish to participate.
In Summary
Providence offers comprehensive outpatient counseling services for adults with substance abuse issues. This hospital-affiliated program is a great choice for those with a dual diagnosis. The clinical setting may deter individuals who want an intimate recovery experience, however the qualified staff and wide range of group topics help to create a solid foundation of long-term recovery.
