Proactive Sober Living is an organization that runs two sober living houses in the LA suburb of Northridge, California. Their properties include one co-ed house on Arminta Street and a male-only house on Wystone Avenue. Both locations are within walking distance of the AA Valley Club on Corbin Boulevard.
Accommodations and Amenities
At the Arminta property, approximately nine men live in the main single-family house, and four women reside in a back cottage. The house includes a common area and fully equipped kitchen. The male-only house accommodates 12 men and sits on a half-acre estate. Residents share double-occupancy furnished rooms. The white walled men’s bedrooms include twin beds with dark wood headboards, a matching nightstands and lamps, and windows with white roller window shades.
The Wystone house includes a spacious living room with a flat screen TV and comfy couches. The house also has a kitchen and a dining room with a large dining table to accommodate the residents for house meetings. Residents are responsible for their own groceries, toiletries and meal preparation. Amenities include Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, Cable TV. Both locations have live-in house managers.
Rules and Regulations
While Proactive Sober Living prefers clients who have a minimum of 30-days of sobriety and who have gone to residential treatment, those with less clean time are considered for admission on a case-by-case basis. Weekly requirements include being at the house meetings, attending three 12-step meetings and actively working with a sponsor who must be secured within 14 days of residency. Clients must give their sponsor’s contact information to the house manager. Residents are also responsible for keeping their rooms clean, and performing assigned household chores, which are posted on a bulletin board.
The house manager conducts random drug and alcohol screenings. Those testing positive are immediately removed from the property. Other incidents that are cause for immediate eviction include carrying firearms, stealing, being violent or disruptive, disappearing past curfew and not informing the house manager of whereabouts, as well as inviting strangers or guests into the house, without prior approval. Additionally, residents aren’t allowed to walk into another house member’s room when they are not home and without permission. Doing so is just cause for immediate termination from the premises. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays. Any client who is not home by curfew is subject to an immediate drug and alcohol screening.
Proactive Sober Living is in close proximity to the Northridge Fashion Center, offering opportunities for shopping and employment.
Proactive Sober Living is also a member of the San Fernando Valley Sober Living Network.
Proactive Sober Living provides a safe and clean environment at a great price for clients new to recovery. For those seeking a 12-step based house at an affordable price, this is a great match. The only drawback is that Proactive Sober Living has no limit on how long a client can stay and is so popular that there are not often vacancies. Potential residents should call ahead and be put on a waiting list.
