The Basics
Founded in 2005, ProActive Institute provides substance abuse treatment services, specializing in treating co-occurring disorders. Located in the Vinings area of Northwest Atlanta, Georgia, ProActive Institute offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) along with family, individual and grief counseling.
Treatment and Staff
Clients admitted to the IOP attend three-hour group therapy three times per week and at least one individual session. The duration of the IOP is six to eight weeks, depending on attendance. Therapy groups are intimate, most having fewer than ten participants. Clients are also subjected to random drug testing throughout their treatment plan.
Treatment at ProActive is built on the foundation of The Matrix Model. It also incorporates mindfulness training, DBT and anger management education. ProActive is a proponent of the 12-step framework and recommends that clients attend 12-step meetings and/or church-based or other peer-support groups while in treatment.
If a client’s mental health diagnosis escalates while in treatment, ProActive provides referrals to one of several local psychiatrists. The treatment team at ProActive is comprised of LPCs, psychologists and MFTs who are all highly experienced in offering dual diagnosis support. Staff partner with ProActive’s psychiatrist to provide medication management for mental health disorders.
Extras
Family members can attend a client’s one-on-one sessions if the treatment team determines it would be beneficial. For aftercare, ProActive works with each client to create a therapy schedule for continued support.

By maintaining relationships with several area psychiatrists and a treatment team highly-experienced in providing individual and family therapy, this program might make an especially effective option for those whose substance abuse is impacted by mental health disorders and trauma.
