Priory Suttons Manor Review
Priory Suttons Manor in the UK is an inpatient facility for men over the age of 50 who are struggling with a personality disorder, complex mental illness, or a history with substance misuse. Clients have daily therapeutic activities, real work opportunities and extensive skills training. Above all, clients focus on transitioning to independent living.
Accommodations and Food
There are 26 beds split between two wards. Clients sleep in private bedrooms and decorate the rooms to their liking. The sprawling nine acre campus has a Zen garden, horticultural center, gym and art room.
The communal lounges have comfortable seating areas and a TV. There are also shared wet rooms throughout the facility with disabled access. Each unit has a fully equipped kitchen and large dining room. Additional places on campus include medical and clinical meetings rooms, classrooms and a retail shop.
Clients learn how to cook and prepare healthy meals. A staff dietitian designs the meal plans.
Treatment and Staff
Clients in this program are focused on meaningful activities and goal setting during every phase of treatment. Daily group and individual therapy addresses specific needs. This includes social skills, regulating emotions and reactions and offense related incidences.
Occupational therapy is an essential part of treatment. This emphasizes the clients’ desires and caters to an older population. This includes learning how to grow their own food, sell produce and working in an established business.
Priory provides clients with jobs in and around the hospital campus in order to promote social and community engagement, and prepare them for their return home. Some of the jobs include editing the monthly newsletter, cleaning the wards, and working in the retail store on campus.
Clients socialize frequently and work on communication skills. Self expression and expressive art therapy is part of every program. During therapy common topics include relapse prevention, feelings of belonging and personal insight.
Therapies include CBT, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and DBT. These methods compliment the strengths and positive based approaches.
Suttons Manor staff are consulting psychiatrists, forensic psychologists, social workers, GPs, nurses and occupational therapists.
Extras
Clients enjoy weekly therapeutic and recreational activities.
Family involvement and participation is encouraged. Clients and their families get to work together in some of the recovery efforts, and family counseling is provided.

The ultimate goal in this program is for clients to eventually step down to independent living. Clients have daily opportunities for success on every level. By the end of their stay, each client has the proper skills and confidence to return to their communities.
