Priory Hazelwood House Review
Hazelwood House is a well-established, low security treatment facility for men in Chesterfield. This program is for clients with behavioral health concerns, learning disabilities, addiction and co-occurring disorders. Treatment includes a wide variety of life skills, occupational therapy activities and education. Clients focus on learning how to live independently and having daily real-world experiences.
Accommodations and Food
Hazelwood House is a beautiful, modern home where 14 clients reside during treatment. Each of the men have their own bedrooms with full bathrooms and TV. The communal lounge is where clients relax in between groups or individual therapy. The lounge has has multiple TVs with cable and Wifi. Other shared areas include the multi-faith room, music room,and office with computers.
On the days when clients are looking for a little peace, they head to the de-escalations and seclusion rooms. Otherwise, the meetings spaces and clinical areas are in use on a daily basis.
The campus has an on-site gym that clients have access to every day. The large backyard has comfortable seating areas that are perfect for socializing, and a quiet, secret garden.
The large dining room and kitchen are active areas of the facility every day. Clients eat three meals a day together, and cook for each other as well. The facility provides all ingredients.
Treatment and Staff
The main focus of treatment is identifying behaviors and avoiding triggers. Every day clients have group sessions for drugs and alcohol, anger management, coping skills and relapse prevention. There are also special sessions for clients with a history of arson and sex offenders who have been rehabilitated.
During individual and group sessions, clients learn behavior modification approaches and experience evidence-based modalities such as CBT and DBT. Interventions address social skills and mindfulness. Clients also work on their ability for self expression and attend psychodrama groups.
The Stop and Think group works on impulse control through social problem solving therapy. Every approach helps to build self esteem and promotes mental and physical health.
The staff of Hazelwood House are specially trained in personality disorders and are adept at addressing and reducing challenging behaviors. On-site staff includes psychiatrists, nurses, forensic psychologists, healthcare workers, medical doctors, occupational therapists, social workers, speech therapists, health and fitness instructors and housekeepers.
Extras
Recreational and occupational activities include arts and crafts, group and one on one cooking classes, pet therapy and physical fitness, which takes place at the on-site gym.
Finally, vocational training and educational opportunities are available throughout the program. Clients can work and make their own money, or volunteer within the community.

Regardless of their complex mental health needs, this program emphasizes the importance of self care and independence. Above all, it gives these men all the tools to succeed.
