Prince George's County Maryland CAP ProgramThe Basics

Prince George’s County Maryland Children and Parents Program (CAP Program) was founded 1995 in Capitol Heights, Maryland, a small town in the northwestern part of the state, just on the border of Washington, DC. The program operates under Prince George’s County Health Department, offering outpatient substance abuse treatment for adult women as well as pregnant women and women with children in the Prince George’s county area.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process begins with an in-person assessment with a counselor. During this meeting, the counselor determines what level of care the client may need. CAP Program receives 90% of its funding from the state, and clients are encouraged to apply for Medicaid if they do not have insurance. As long as the client is a resident of the county and unemployed, she is eligible for an extremely discounted cost. If the client is in need of a higher level of care CAP Program can make referrals to outside residential or detox facilities.

CAP Program lasts for as long as the client needs but the average length of treatment is between four to six months. The therapy consists of both group and individual counseling. Group meetings are offered three days a week Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 9:15 am to 12:15 pm. These sessions consist of education and group sharing. The size of the meetings is generally small, ranging from five to 10 clients. CAP Program also offers anger management and parenting classes. Individual meetings are scheduled based on the needs of the client and last from 30 to 60 minutes. The counselors use the principles of 12-step recovery and encourage clients to attend outside AA and NA meetings while in the program.

This particular program is not dual diagnosis but clients with potential co-occurring disorders can be referred to an outside psychiatrist.

The staff at CAP Program consists of licensed substance abuse counselors.

Extras

Upon consent of the client, CAP Program offers group family counseling with the client, their family members and a counselor. These meetings focus on co-dependency issues and substance abuse education.

The CAP Program also offers perinatal care and has an on-site daycare for clients with children.

Although it does not have an official aftercare program, clients are encouraged to join the organization’s very active alumni network.
