Primary PurposeThe Basics

Founded in 2003, Primary Purpose Sober House is a structured sober living environment for men in recovery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It was established by several AA members who wanted to help those in the community who were being released from incarceration to avoid relapse. Since its inception, Primary Purpose has outgrown its original building that served just twenty clients, now their facilities include six buildings at two different locations.

Accommodations and Amenities

Primary Purpose Sober House houses up to 48 men. Four clients share two-bedroom furnished apartments that include bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms with TVs. Primary Purpose Sober House features landscaped gardens, plentiful parking spots and a work out area. Residents are responsible for purchasing their own groceries and prepare their own meals. Linens, towels, pillows and basic hygiene items are provided for newly arrived clients.

Rules and Regulations

Transitional care is not provided at Primary Purpose Sober House, however mental health, medical and outpatient referrals are provided. Residents must have gone through detox prior to arrival. A preliminary drug and alcohol urine screening is conducted. Minimum commitment time is three months, but the typical length of stay is between six and nine months.

Primary Purpose Sober House is a 12-step based program, broken down into four phases. During the first phase, clients obtain home groups, get sponsors and memorize the first and second steps. In addition, they gain employment and take care of their financial affairs. The phases parallel the program of recovery as outlined in the Big Book. By the time they graduate, they will have completed their steps. Typically, a client looks for  job with regular daytime hours and the evenings are committed to his recovery.

Three weekly in-house AA meetings are required which include a Monday night closed meeting at 8 pm, a Tuesday night open Big Book study at 8:30 pm and a Friday night 8 pm open-discussion speaker meeting. In addition, residents attend mandatory house meetings at 10:30 pm on Sundays. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, clients are offered their choice of meetings. Primary Purpose Sober House monitors the progress of residents during their stay. Clients must also perform an hour of community service per week.

Extras

Primary Purpose Sober House provides a money management program for those having a difficult time holding onto available funds.

In Summary

For those who have trouble with the 12 step approach or a rigorous recovery program, this is definitely not the right place. But for men who have recently been released from jail or completed residential treatment and need a lot of structure because they have had trouble staying clean and sober in the past (Primary Purpose refers to them as “last gaspers”), this is a great match.
