Urbana IllinoisThe Basics

Located in the Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana, Illinois, Prevention and Treatment Services (PATS) has been providing outpatient substance abuse treatment since 2010. PATS was founded by Patricia Ray (MSW) who has over 25 years of experience in substance abuse and crisis counseling. PATS also offers treatment for shopping addiction and domestic violence and has a variety of classes for parenting and youth activities.

Treatment and Staff

After an assessment, clients are given a treatment plan that includes group and individual therapy and additional classes—such as parenting skills—anger management and partner abuse intervention.

Most substance abuse treatment plans last eight to 10 weeks and include group therapy from one to four times a week (twice a week is the average) and individual therapy as-needed. The treatment team is comprised of CADCs who use evidence-based methods including CBT as their therapeutic foundation as well as Motivational Interviewing (MI) and DBT.

Twelve step or other peer-support meetings are encouraged (but not required), depending on each individual’s needs and history. The frequency of meetings is discussed with each client after their assessment. Most counselors also include 12-step meetings as a component of their client’s aftercare plan.

PATS founder, Patricia Ray, is also qualified to provide therapy for clients with co-occurring disorders. However, if a client’s mental health disorder escalates and/or medication is required, Ray gives referrals to a nearby psychiatrist who has an on-going relationship with PATS.

Extras

PATS offers a relapse prevention group twice each week for aftercare. It also provides services in Spanish. The youth program includes classes on substance-free social interaction (or “hang out” skills), problem solving and exercise.

In Summary

Prevention and Treatment Services offers a flexible outpatient program committed to helping clients improve their problem-solving skills using CBT and other evidence-based treatment methods. With its additional complement of parenting, partner abuse, anger management and youth classes, PATS might be an especially effective treatment option for those who wish to heal their families from the violence and pain brought on by their addiction.
