Situated in San Jose, California, Positive Progression has been serving the San Francisco Bay and its surrounding areas since 1989. Specializing in chemical dependency and dual diagnosis issues, Positive Progression offers a completely free medical, neurological and psychological examination to determine if the program is right for each potential client. The small number of patients, competent staff and comfortable, clean setting all contribute to making this rehab a really encouraging option for those who are ready to, as they say here, “get [their]life back now.”
Accommodations and Food
To say Positive Progression is an intimate atmosphere is an understatement. It only treats six residents at a time and clients live like family in a well-lit and cozy home in a quiet residential neighborhood. There is a yard with a swimming pool in the back surrounded by chaise lounges and fantastic views of the Santa Cruz mountain range. Clients currently live two to a room but Positive Progression is in the process of setting up another location where private rooms will be available.
There is a French Culinary Institute-trained chef on-site full time who prepares all of the meals. She has a medical background so meals are healthy and the food itself is always organic and recovery-conscious. Clients help with chores in the kitchen around meal times and to keep the house tidy.
Treatment and Staff
Clients have the opportunity to undergo a medically managed detox on site, supervised by the aforementioned addiction specialist doctor. From there, they may opt for 30-day residential treatment, Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or outpatient care. The bulk of the clients treated opt for the residential route. Regardless, an individualized treatment plan is created for each person. Treatment does center in the 12-step recovery process but the group and individual therapy here is very intense and tailored to each person’s needs. Besides CBT, clients have the opportunity to experience Amino Acid Therapy, didactic therapy and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), too.
Positive Progression is not a psychiatric facility but it does welcome those with co-occurring disorders. Each client’s mental and physical wellness determines his or her day-to-day schedule but the goal is to socially reintegrate people through the treatment process. When clients are ready, they begin attending off-site recovery meetings and working with a sponsor and those clients who are physically able are taken to a local gym each day.
Besides program founder Katy McDowell, whose dedication to the rehab is praised by everyone who attends, there are also several certified drug and alcohol counselors (over five, which is a lot for a facility with only six residents) and one expert licensed clinical psychologist on-site. There is also an overseeing medical doctor specializing in drug and alcohol addiction for over 30 years. While there’s no full-time psychiatrist on staff, they do have a local one at their disposal when psychiatric services are needed. Almost all of the staff here is in recovery themselves.
Family visitation occurs once a week and at this time, families receive joint counseling with the resident as well as some group addiction education. Positive Progression also provides aftercare assistance; when clients are ready to leave the residential program they are assisted in the process of securing transitional care or sober living situations so they know what the next step is.
Clients are transported to massage appointments (at an extra but notably inexpensive cost) and the previously mentioned state-of-the-art swimming pool is certainly a bonus. Additional recreational group outings are offered as client’s progress through treatment; movies, bowling and the like.
Positive Progression accepts all insurance and readily helps clients figure out the most beneficial strategy for utilizing their insurance benefits. It’s also an extremely affordable facility, considering the ultra personal care and amenities, and the experienced and dedicated team. Positive Progression is continually growing both in size and good reputation, which are definitely attributes to take into account when someone is ready to get to the root of their addiction issues.
