Treatment and Staff
Positive Directions provides individual, group and family counseling in addition to intervention services. Mostly preventative in nature, the programs offered aim to curtail the possibility of an addiction forming by educating kids about the risks of drugs and alcohol. Treatment length and intensity varies depending on the circumstances. The primary therapeutic methods are CBT and DBT.
Positive Directions’ core programs are designed for the parents of adolescents as a way to broaden communication and create a home environment that aids in the prevention of a developing addiction. The signature program, known as Creating Lasting Family Connections, educates parents about what drugs are most common in their area and what the lasting effect can be on their children. Evidence-based therapeutic approaches are utilized so parents can successfully communicate with children at risk and hopefully delay the use of alcohol and drugs. Additionally, the facility offers a support group tailored specifically for the parents of children with ongoing substance abuse issues. These meetings are led by an addiction counselor and serve as a sounding board for sharing concerns and possibly learning some new prevention strategies.
While Positive Directions does not facilitate 12-step meetings on site, it does encourage attendance at both AA/NA and Alanon meetings in the community. Counseling can be provided for those with co-occurring disorders such as depression or anxiety and staff is able to recommend clients to various agencies for additional forms of therapy to support dual diagnosis issues or facilitate medication management if required.
Positive Directions offers specialty programs that focus on crisis and suicide prevention as well as compulsive gambling.
The education-based programs offered at Positive Directions give the families of adolescents on the verge of facing serious addiction the positive tools of communication and knowledge to aid in diverting them from going down a potentially destructive path. For any young person already struggling with substance abuse, the establishment of familial support, evidence-based therapy and an introduction to 12-step principles are all crucial resources offered at an affordable rate through this organization.
