Seattle WashingtonA Positive Alternative Review

Founded in 1990 in Seattle, Washington, by Catherine Trestrail, A Positive Alternative, originally known as Women’s Recovery Center, provides a non-12-step based outpatient substance abuse treatment. Gender-specific Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) programs are offered to adults suffering from chemical dependency. A Positive Alternative incorporates a holistic approach, with the belief that AA dogma tends to have a shaming effect and that “one size does not fit all” when it comes to recovery.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, clients undergo an initial assessment with an intake counselor. IOP is gender-specific. The program length is a year. During the first two months, weekly treatment includes between three and four group sessions. For the next five months, treatment includes one weekly group session. The final five months of care include monthly individual sessions.

At A Positive Alternative, evidence-based modalities including Motivation Enhancement Therapy (MET) in conjunction with CBT are used during treatment. Group topics include early recovery, the neuroscience of addiction, the inner critic, processing, life skills, coping strategies, sober fun and meditation. Co-occurring disorders and gender-specific issues are addressed during therapy. Referrals for medication management are provided, if necessary. Groups are kept small, with no more than eight clients per session. Clients are encouraged to voluntarily attend recovery support groups, including 12-step meetings, provided that they prove beneficial.

Staff includes a Master’s Level chemical dependency professional, a Master’s-level psychologist, three LADCs, a Doctorate-level clinical psychologist and a naturopathic physician, as well as administrative support.

Extras

The women’s program includes wellness classes, which discuss how food affects mood, proper nutrition and the physiology of cravings.

In Summary

Clients rave about A Positive Alternative saying that their approach, which focuses on mental health in conjunction with addiction issues, has helped them achieve long-term sobriety. A Positive Alternative is a thoughtful program, and allows clients an opportunity to view addiction in a different light. For those interested in 12-step recovery, A Positive Alternative sounds like a great addition. And for those who prefer to use their Big Book as a paperweight, this drug rehab could also be what the doctor ordered.
