Portage Québec Adolescent Review
Portage is a Canadian non-profit organization that helps people suffering from addiction and mental health issues. Since it was established in 1970, Portage has developed specialized drug rehabilitation programs for adolescents, adults, pregnant women and mothers with children, the aboriginal community, adults with mental health issues and individuals involved in the criminal justice system. Portage operates nine addiction treatment programs, based on the therapeutic community approach, in its four facilities in Atlantic Canada, Québec and Ontario.
The Portage Québec City Adolescent program is a gender-specific residential treatment program for French-speaking youth between the ages of 14 and 18 who are Eastern Québec residents. Located in the Québec City suburb of Saint-Malachie, this facility offers evidence-based methods and the 12 steps, in addition to holistic methods.
Accommodations and Food
The tidy, white building where the adolescent clients reside during treatment offers 16 beds in fully furnished, double-occupancy gender-specific bedrooms. Full beds, desks and wardrobes are provided in each room. There are several shared bathrooms throughout the facility. The spacious residence includes classrooms with access to computers, a dining hall and gymnasium where clients play basketball, volleyball or have group fitness classes. There are also lounge areas with TVs and books for down times between classes or groups.
The nutrition and overall wellness of the clients is a focus while in treatment and the residents are served three meals a day that are prepared on-site. A staff nutritionist creates carefully-designed set menus.
Treatment and Staff
Portage Quebec Adolescent offers an average of three months in treatment, but clients can stay up to six months if necessary. Detox is not offered in this program but referrals can be provided. For those with co-occurring disorders, there is a nurse available 24 hours a day for medication management services.
The program is entirely gender-specific with boys and girls separated into different sections of the facility for everything except school. There is a strong emphasis on a positive peer culture environment, with the senior residents serving as peer counselors. Daily group and weekly individual therapy employ CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). The clients become familiar with AA and attend several on-site meetings a week. Education is emphasized while in treatment and the clients are required to attend a fully-accredited on-site school.
The staff members of Portage Quebec Adolescent are a multi disciplinary team of MDs, RNs and clinical behavioral health counselors.
Extras
There are family counseling services incorporated into each clients treatment program.
Clients have opportunities to participate in team sports, yoga, martial arts, hiking, biking and cooking workshops. Community outings are arranged to visit museums and every month the residents take a camping trip, weather permitting.
