PORT Health Adolescent Inpatient Review

PORT Health is a network of care facilities throughout North Carolina. There are programs for adolescents and adults dealing with addiction and co-occurring disorders. The adolescent inpatient treatment uses the 12 steps along with an evidence-based treatment model known as Seven Challenges. This teen track incorporates several approaches, including adventure therapy, individual and group therapy, and life skills training. In addition to the therapeutic element of this program, clients continue their education by attending daily classes in an accredited school on campus. It’s worth mentioning, PORT Health is a not-for-profit program that is CARF Accredited.

Accommodations and Food

There are three residential treatment locations for adolescents in Greenville, Aberdeen and Burgaw. These facilities are home-like and accommodate on average between nine and 20 clients. The bedrooms are all shared, some situated in dorm style living spaces. Each of the locations has several bathrooms. Clients living at the Aberdeen facility are on the same campus as the Bethesda Link School Program.

An on-site kitchen staff prepares and serves all meals. Clients eat together in the shared dining space with their age group three times a day. However, there are meal planning and food prep classes during treatment. As a result, clients are able to prepare some of their own meals at points during the program.

Treatment and Staff

The adolescent program is referred to as the “day program.” This is an intensive five day a week track. There are never more than two days in a row with no programming elements. Treatment days consist of group and individual therapy that focus on strength based approaches, feedback and reflection. Residents also attend daily AA and NA meetings off campus. The facility provides transportation to and from these meetings. Drug education offers facts about the use of drugs in a non-judgmental environment.

Five days a week the clients attend age appropriate classes. These classes can either entail a continuation of their current grade, or vocational training. Each teen has a customized education goal plan that reflects the desires of the client, parents, staff and educators while in treatment. Ideally, younger clients return to their home schools and pick up where they left off. There are also opportunities to earn a GED, or continue on to a vocational training program, or enroll in college.

Throughout treatment clients focus on behavior management, identifying triggers and symptoms, community integration, personal hygiene and community living skills. Clients work together to create a social network of support.

Common treatment approaches include CBT, DBT, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and medication management.

Staff of the adolescent residential and day program include LPNs, LCSWs, LCASs, LPCs, SACs, and psychiatrists.

Extras

Clients have a lot of extracurricular activities during treatment. This includes art therapy, yoga, weekend outings, music therapy, group sports, and recreational therapy. Recreational therapy is integrated into treatment on a daily basis. This can include ping pong, indoor and outdoor sports, arts and crafts, and movie nights.

Finally, the adventure therapy element of treatment consists of camping trips around the country.

In Summary

Above all, the adolescent day program at PORT Health sets a clear goal of having clients learn valuable life skills so they can transition back to their communities seamlessly. The educational element combined with the myriad of therapeutic activities sets residents up for a foundation of success. While living in a comfortable and supportive environment, the teens are able to voice their goals during treatment, improve their communication skills and learn how to manage their symptoms within a safe network of support.
