Polk County Addiction ServicesThe Basics

Under the auspices of Polk County Behavioral Health, Polk County Addiction Services offers outpatient substance abuse treatment to adults and adolescents and their families. Located in Dallas, Oregon, about 15 miles west of Salem, Addiction Services has been providing treatment to area residents for more than 20 years. Though its offices on the second floor of the Academy Mental Health Building in Dallas are somewhat clinical, warm colors and cushioned seats enhance the comfort level. Group therapy and education sessions take place in small conference rooms and individual therapy takes place in more intimate counseling offices.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment begins with an initial assessment to identify a prospective client’s needs related to substance abuse or co-occurring disorders. Once assessed, they are assigned a primary counselor and group therapy.

Clients participate in either regular outpatient or Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs, both of which use evidence-based techniques including CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). IOP consists of nine hours or more of group and individual sessions with the option to attend in the morning or evening. Typically, clients have a one-hour individual session supplemented by groups three times a week for two hours each and cover topics ranging from coping skills to trauma and stress management.

Clients who finish IOP often step down to outpatient treatment, which consists of six hours a week (or less) of group and individual therapy on an as-needed basis. Topics are similar to those in IOP and duration is usually six weeks.

Though the addiction program isn’t 12-step based, clients are encouraged to attend some kind of faith-based or outside support group.

The adolescent outpatient program meets twice a week for a total of five hours including one hour of individual therapy.

The treatment team consists of licensed substance abuse counselors, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners and Master’s-level therapists. Credentials include CADC I, II and III, MSW and MCSW.

Extras

Family group therapy is available as a component of treatment. Typical duration is six to eight weeks, but depends on the individual’s progress. There’s also a two-hour family education class that meets each week. In addition, parents and/or legal guardians of adolescents can participate in group or individual sessions that focus on co-dependency and family dynamics.

In Summary

Polk County Addiction Services provides comprehensive outpatient and IOP for adolescents and adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. This is pretty much no-frills treatment, but with more than two decades of experience, it is a good, affordable choice.
