The Chicago-based Polish American Association facilitates an outpatient addiction program called Starting Point, geared toward people struggling with substance abuse and their families. Therapeutic approaches include an introduction to the 12 steps, psychoeducationgroup and individual counseling. Programs are flexible in terms of hours, individualized and available for Polish speaking teens and adults at a low cost (free for anyone who is homeless).

Treatment and Staff

Starting Point begins with an assessment that determines the best treatment track. While program lengths vary, they typically include group sessions scheduled at different times throughout the week to accommodate a variety of work and school schedules. Individual therapy commences once-a-week and the attendance of AA/NA meetings is required. Clients are assessed regularly during treatment so that their progress can be tracked and a discharge and aftercare plan can be designed.

Starting Point offers gender-specific counseling and programs specifically geared towards teens, both of which address issues such as past traumas or violence. Counselors employ CBT as well as a holistic approach and a focus on relapse prevention. For clients with co-occurring disorders, the options to be seen by a psychiatrist or physician is available by referral.

The staff running the outpatient program at Polish American Association are all substance abuse counselors.

Extras

The aftercare programs are free to all graduates for life.

Additional services include family counseling and groups on domestic violence, anger management and parenting, as well as employment services, immigrant programs and a food and clothing pantry. Family counseling is also offered.

In Summary

Starting Point via the Polish American Association offers a safe environment for clients struggling with addiction but lacking a built-in support system in their family or community. All programs are bi-lingual so there is never any worry of not being able to communicate during therapy and the facility offers many resources to help enhance the lives of its clients.
