POEM OfficeThe Basics

POEM Human Services in Westland, Michigan provides outpatient services to adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Founded in 1988, POEM (Praises of Emmanuel Ministry) believes that in order for individuals to recover from addiction, they must find a spiritual path in combination with counseling. Emmanuel Taylor, who founded POEM, is a pastor and Master’s-level therapist with CADC certification and treats patients in individual and group therapy. Located about 15 minutes outside of Detroit, POEM serves residents throughout Wayne County.

Treatment and Staff

The first step at POEM is an assessment to determine a client’s individual needs. Dual diagnosis support is available for co-occurring disorders, but medication management is not provided.

In individual and group sessions, Taylor uses an evidence-based approach including CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Typically, clients have individual therapy at least once a week for the first month and, if needed, group therapy. Session topics include managing depression and anxiety, coping skills, spirituality and recovery, dealing with cravings, life skills management, intervention and prevention, grief counseling, anger management and relapse prevention. Similar topics are addressed in groups for adolescents but with the addition of age-appropriate subjects such as peer pressure, how to have fun in a sober way and healthy living skills. Group size is limited to eight for adults and adolescents.

POEM supports the idea that addiction is a family disease and thus encourages spouses and significant others to also participate in group sessions (separately from the client). Topics include co-dependency, self-esteem, spirituality and healing, family dynamics, role playing and communication skills. In addition to groups, POEM encourages affiliation and participation in a spiritual organization of some kind—a church, AA, NA or other 12-step organization.

Though regular office hours are maintained, Taylor meets with clients at various times, including evenings, to accommodate their schedules and those of their families.

In Summary

POEM provides an eclectic and individualized approach to treating substance abuse. Emanuel Taylor, its founder and chief counselor, supports a spiritual component to recovery, but clients are not required to be church-affiliated. Instead, POEM embraces the principles of compassion, tolerance and understanding as a basis for recovery.
