Kailua HawaiiThe Basics

Located in Kailua, Hawaii, Po’ailani Inc. treatment facility has been serving the island community of Oahu since 1976. Beginning as a residential treatment facility, Po’ailani has since expanded its reach to provide a continuum of care that includes an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), basic outpatient services and sober living facilities with more than 50 clinical staff members.

Po’ailani Inc. boasts over 35 years of providing substance abuse treatment with a special focus on the unique needs of clients with co-occurring mental health issues. Treatment is evidence based with individual and group therapy using psychoeducation and behavioral modification modalities.

Treatment and Staff

Po’ailani specializes in providing dual-diagnosis support for clients struggling with addiction or substance abuse and mental health issues. The clinical staff believe that each client’s needs are unique and as such all programming provides individualized treatment. Prior to treatment, all clients are assessed by an intake counselor to determine their best recovery path. All therapy is conducted by Master’s-level clinicians who specialize in the treatment of co-occurring disorders. All groups use psychoeducation and behavioral modification techniques.

A three-phase plan is employed by Po’ailani allowing staff to monitor progress through treatment. The first level is the Day Treatment track—a process typically lasting 30-to 90-days. Clients attend daily meetings at the facility five days a week for both group and individual sessions with the goal of developing trust between clients and their counselors and to motivate the client in their own pursuit of recovery.

The second stage of outpatient is traditional IOP. Ideally clients remain in this stage for an additional 30-to-90 days. Attending three weekly group meetings and one individual session, treatment emphasizes the development of attainable goals. Interpersonal skills are developed to prepare the client for returning work and family life.

The final phase of treatment is aftercare lasting one to three months. Clients are prepared for discharge and reintegration into the community. Group sessions are held twice per week and incorporate relapse prevention techniques and encouragement to establish their place in the AA/NA communities. Individual sessions are scheduled as needed.

Staff includes MFTs, LCSWs and psychiatrists who work with clients on developing a deeper understanding of recovery. Medication management is available and monitored by staff psychiatrists.

In Summary

With a comprehensive recovery program including a solid residential treatment track, Po’ailani provides a thorough and knowledgeable approach to substance abuse and dual-diagnosis treatment. The IOP offers three levels of treatment that includes aftercare and integrates family for each client’s best chances of post-treatment support. Clients benefit from an individualized treatment approach that utilizes evidence based therapy and dual-diagnosis support.
