Los Angeles CaliforniaThe Basics

Plaza Community Center started as a nonprofit agency in 1916 to assist Mexican-American populations in Southern California. In 1954, PCC moved to East Los Angeles, following the large shift of the Hispanic Angelino community during that time. Over the decades, PCC developed multiple programs intended to provide medical, family and mental health services to the surrounding community. In 1990, the Esperanza substance abuse program was developed to provide thorough outpatient services on a sliding-fee scale for the Hispanic community of Los Angeles.

Treatment and Staff

The Esperanza substance abuse program is a six month to one year outpatient program developed to target the specific issues that low-income Mexican-American populations face. Eligible clients receive financial assistance to remain in treatment. Transportation services, meals and on-site childcare are provided and treatment is offered both in English and Spanish. All client programming is overseen by case managers proficient in providing referrals to detox services or inpatient programs as needed.

All clients are screened by an intake counselor to assess the level of care needed. Once enrolled, clients are engaged in a variety of programming that focuses on psychoeducation and the 12-step philosophy. The majority of counseling is group format and offered Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm to accommodate work, family and school schedules. Group topics include health, parenting, life skills, anger management and family issue resolution. All groups are facilitated by CADCs who are bilingual and sensitive to cultural issues.

Individual therapy is also available weekly or biweekly. All sessions utilize CBT and DBT techniques in tandem with Motivational Interviewing (MI). One-on-one sessions assist in crisis intervention and steering clients towards better decisions with their recovery. Dual diagnosis support is offered with an approval from the client’s psychiatrist. Clients with co-occurring disorders are responsible for properly self-administering medication as prescribed.

In tandem with group and individual therapy, clients must attend five off-site AA/NA meetings each week and obtain signatures proving attendance. Clients are encouraged to get a sponsor and to work through the twelve steps. To ensure abstinence during treatment, weekly drug testing is mandatory and performed Monday through Friday between 8 am and 5 pm at the discretion of case managers.

Extras

Esperanza organizes several weekly outings to connect clients with community resources. Activities include attendance of job fairs, visiting health clinics and recovery-based events arranged by local sober communities. Locating referrals for employment assistance and family resources is also an essential component of the program and is considered a requirement for success.

In Summary

The Esperanza program is steeped in almost 100 years of service for the Latino population of Southern California. Offering vocational, mental health, behavioral health and family services, clients can expect to find everything they need under one roof. Esperanza’s substance abuse outpatient treatment ensures that clients have stable footing for long-term recovery. Backed by a supportive sober community, extra assistance with childcare, transportation and food all enable clients to develop active lives while developing autonomy and overall well-being.
